NAGA CITY-Residents along two thoroughfares and one village in Naga City woke up Tuesday to find their streetlights turned off earlier than usual after operatives from the Camarines Sur II Electric Cooperative (Casureco II) had disconnected power supply, claiming that the city government had failed to pay P30 million power consumption debt.

The general services department of the city government confirmed that Casureco II had disconnected power supply to city streetlights in Panganiban Avenue, Elias Angeles Street, and Barangay Dayangdang.

NAGA CITY, June 30 --- The Philippine National Railways (PNR) Tagkawayan-Naga stretch will soon be operational in time for the forthcoming Peñafrancia fiesta here.

The assurance came from Naga City-based PNR consultant Nicolas Beda Priela who told media practitioners that the rehabilitation works in the area are being rushed for the celebration of the regional fiesta in September this year.

LEGAZPI CITY (June 29, 2009) - - THE FLOOD CONTROL COMPONENT of the hugely budgeted and biggest dam structure being constructed in Bikol under the Bicol River Basin and Watershed Management Project (BRBWMP) has been left-out in the current construction of the dam located in Barangay Malaguico, Sipocot, Camarines Sur, experts at the planning and design of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regional office here had revealed.

NAGA CITY,June 30 (PNA) -- The construction of the P1.3 billion skyway bridge project that will connect the 2nd District town of Canaman and Libmanan municipality in the 1st District of Camarines Sur is scheduled to start in October this year, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Tuesday.

District Engineer Gilbert Olfindo of the DPWH Camarines Sur 1st Engineering District Office said the opening of bids for the project is set on August 23, 2009 at the DPWH central office in Manila.

LEGAZPI CITY, June 30 (PNA) -- The sudden surrender of Florencio "Jun" Fernandez, the convicted killer of former Congressman Moises Espinosa, Sr., caught law enforcement authorities by surprise as they were still on heightened manhunt operation in Masbate.

Sketchy reports said the convict, after eight days in hiding since he bolted jail in Masbate on June 22, surrendered to lawyer Rainer Butalid, a former Vice Governor of Masbate and one Police Chief Supt. Lasaris from Camp Crame at around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at undisclosed hideout in Masbate City.

CASTILLA, Sorsogon, June 30 (PNA) -- The viability of cassava as source of bio-ethanol has been determined and Sorsogon province is a good prospect for a massive production of this lowly root crop, Vice-Governor Renato Laurinaria said here Tuesday.

"If cassava is becoming an important bio-fuel crop in other countries with more advanced national programs for bio-fuel production, our soils are also capable of large-scale production of the crop not only for food, livestock feeds but mainly for bio-ethanol," he stressed.

GAINZA, Camarines Sur-There are two things in Gainza that even perennial flooding cannot wash away-the aspiration of the town and the resiliency of its people.

Beset by flooding, poverty, and out-migration of residents, the small and fifth class municipality (annual income: P15 million to P24 million) has struggled to keep its identity amid the urban sprawl of metropolitan Naga City.

With 9, 404 residents (2007 est.), the town is the least populous in Camarines Sur. It is also one of the poorest.

MANILA, July 3, 2009-The recent decision of the Senate of the Philippines' leadership to recall several whistleblowers' security escorts will unnecessarily put their lives at risk and discourage future whistleblowers from coming out according to Catholic church leaders.

CBCP President and Jaro (Iloilo) Archbishop Angel N. Lagdameo said the decision will "cast some fear on future whistleblowers" because they will be deprived of their safety.

VATICAN, June 28, 2009-- Benedict XVI affirmed to the bishops of Vietnam that religion is not a threat to national unity, and that Church-state relations can be carried out in a spirit of cooperation.

The Pope made these points Saturday upon receiving in audience members of Vietnam's episcopal conference, who were in Rome for their five-yearly visit.

"A healthy cooperation between the Church and the political community is possible," the Holy Father said. He also noted that "religions do not represent a threat to the unity of the nation."

MANILA, June 26 -- Prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will increase by P3 per kilogram tomorrow.

Arnel Ty, president of LPG Marketers Association (LPGMA) said effective tomorrow morning they will implement a P3 per kilogram or P33 adjustment in the 11 kg LPG cylinder.

"We will implement P3 increase per kg [increase] tomorrow morning" Ty said.

Ty said the price hike is basically due to "increase in contract price in the international market.

VATICAN, June 24, 2009-- The Vatican confirmed today Benedict XVI will receive in audience U.S. President Barack Obama next month.

The meeting, set for the afternoon of July 10, will be the first between the Pontiff and the new president.

Obama's Vatican visit will take place within the context of his participation in the Group of Eight summit, which will be held July 8-10 in L'Aquila, Italy.

The famed "Bikol Express" which ran from Manila to Sorsogon and vice versa but which halted because of super typhoons Milenyo and Reming in 2006, was announced to be returning to serve the community by May 2010.
