The Bicol Association of Catholic Schools (BACS) has issued a statement declaring its opposition to the scheduling of the traditional Military Parade during the days of the Peñafrancia novena.

The BACS' statement was a result of the meeting of BACS representatives last June 18 in Naga; the meeting was part of the Catholic schools' efforts "to discern ways and means to preserve and enhance the devotion to Ina."

In their statement, the signatory schools were unanimous in declaring "that a Military Parade has relevance neither to the celebration nor to the enhancement of the Devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia."

They added that because of the above, the Military Parade "should not be scheduled within the Novena to Our Lady of Peñafrancia."

The BACS schools further urged that "the Military Parade be scheduled outside of the Novena on such a civic holiday as Naga Charter Day or on Philippine Independence Day."

Roco, who had just celebrated his 44th birthday the night before he was killed, was jogging when he was attacked by his killer.

How exactly will Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo consult "the people" regarding the proposal from the Naga City Executive Council on Tercentenary Celebration to move the schedule of the civic-military parades?

We ask this question in view of the news that the confused mayor cannot decide on the said proposal which emanated from a council of his own creation. Why create a council which is tasked of sorting out the matter at hand only to proclaim afterwards that "the people" would need to be consulted? Had the proposal been to retain the schedule of these said activities, would Mayor Robredo declare that "the people" need to be consulted? Incidentally, was "the people" consulted regarding the experimental traffic scheme at Panganiban Drive?

June 5, 9:15 PM. There he is again! Back to Germany for the second time! Oh no, this is not Berlin, it is Dresden. Obama is not heading for Berlin in this visit. In fact he is not really into meeting anyone from Berlin. His concern is completely different.

Independence Day for us, I bet, is just another holiday we look forward to. No work and no classes. Unlike Christmas or Holy Week that have deep meanings for us.

I left the Philippines last May 15 just when the world was in panic about a kind of flu tagged as having to do with pigs. The image of this animal and the symptoms of high fever were just too much to bear for human beings. The birds brought SARS; the monkeys offered Ebola. Now, the swine is proffering a new disease.
