NAGA CITY (28 May)-- A TRAFFIC EXPERIMENTATION being implemented by the Robredo Administration's Public Safety Office (PSO) along Panganiban Drive, a major thoroughfare that led to the old Naga commercial district, has now become a major concern to many affected business establishments, whose owners are saying the "experimental traffic scheme" will only favor the newly opened "SM City Naga" once ratified as an ordinance.

NAGA CITY—The only Jesuit learning institution in Bikol region is also the first among all other schools and universities in the country to have institutional accreditation from Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU).

Ateneo de Naga University (AdNU) beat all the major Manila-based universities to the accreditation.

PILI CAMARINES SUR (27 May)-- ABOUT A HUNDRED fish-cage operators in nine barangays surrounding Lake Bato in this province is being planned for a rehab-assistance by the regional office of the Bureau of Fisheries And Aquatic Resources (BFAR) base here, after the said operators sustained big losses reaching P 11.714 million as a result of a "fish-kill" incident that affected more than 4,000 fish-cages and the loss of some 151,500 Tilapia-fish stocks.

Has the VFA served its avowed purpose? Or has it only reinforced the unequal alliance between the Philippines and the United States, a relationship so tilted in the Americans' favor that to call the VFA a treaty - with all the word's connotation of equal rights, benefits and privileges - would be a travesty?

NAGA CITY -- REPORTS REACHING the  Police Provincial Office (PPO) here during the last 5-days from the localities of Calabanga, Libmanan, Bato, and Goa towns all in Camarines Sur province, noted the series of armed robberies perpetrated by armed men clad in bonnets.

Earlier, police provincial director Sr. Supt. Rodolfo Llorca has directed police chiefs in the first and fourth districts of the province where most of the armed robberies have occurred, to activate an "operational plan" required for municipal police stations (MPS) against organized crime groups.

The merits of Brigada Eskwela, the just  concluded annual program of activities implemented by the Department of Education and is spearheaded by parent-volunteers, need to be extolled if only to draw more people in supporting it.

DepEd Memorandum 79 of 2003 established the program-initially-as the National Schools Maintenance Week. In a more recent memorandum, namely, Memo #168 series of 2009,  it describes "Brigada Eskwela [as] a schools maintenance program nationwide that engages all education stakeholders to contribute their time, effort, and resources in ensuring that all public schools are ready in time for school opening."

VATICAN, May 28, 2009-- The bishops of Italy met this afternoon with Pope Benedict, who spoke to them about the "urgent task" of education in Christian values, the upcoming Year for Priests, the earthquake that struck the Abruzzo region and the impact of the financial crisis.

The meeting of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), which began on May 25 and will last until the 29th, is examining the theme: "The educational question: the urgent task of education."

Addressing the bishops, the Pope began by highlighting their effort to establish "an educational project that stems from a coherent and complete vision of man, which can arise only from the perfect image and realization of him we have in Jesus Christ."

VATICAN, May 26, 2009-- On its first day online, the new website enabling young people from around the world to get to know Pope Benedict XVI, received almost half a million visits.

According to webmaster Father Paolo Padrini of Vatican Radio, the website sponsored by the Pontifical Council for the Laity is intended "to create a climate of belonging, of participating in the Church, through ever greater closeness with the Holy Father."

May 23, 1949 is not a date that is well settled in the Germans' awareness. Maybe that is because May 23 is the date in which Germany was stigmatized by being divided into two states. Yet who would the Germans be today without this date? Without the Basic Law ratified that very day? For it is, to my mind, the best one Germany ever had in its entire history!

Yesterday, I traveled with my students to Kamakura, in the Kanagawa Prefecture, our equivalent of the province. That was our second day in Tokyo, after the sedate urban life of Nagoya, and I was attempting to show them-in a very old fashioned way-how in a country different time zones and generations can find themselves linked to each other.
