Caceres Archbishop Leonardo Z. Legaspi, O.P., D.D. says in his homily during the Chrism Mass on March 20, Holy Thursday, at the Naga Cathedral that “truth is not defined by political interests and their anointed messengers. All political truth is partial and tainted; only the truth of Christ is pure and whole – and the truth of Christ cannot be grasped by those who manipulate His Church and instrumentalize the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, reducing it to the level of a political tool for political ends and propaganda.”

The 18th Philippine Catholic Congress on Deafness (PCCD) will be held at the Pili, Capitol Convention Centre on November 23-26 with the theme “WE  CARE: Creating an Enabling & Inclusive Environment for the Deaf.”

Initiated in 1989 by Fr. Luke Mootgard, the Executive Secretary of the Health and Handicap Committee of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines then, the annual Philippine Catholic Congress on Deafness is a gathering where insights and stories of the delegates are shared with other members of deaf organizations coming from the entire country.

Manila, 07 August 2007 – Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Hermogenes Esperon’s order to create five courts martial to try soldiers accused of human rights violations drew mixed reactions from Catholic church leaders. In a press conference at Camp Aguinaldo Tuesday, Esperon said these courts martial will begin working tomorrow and try soldiers facing charges in civilian courts.

Butuan Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos, a member of the Melo Commission said, “It is a positive step for stopping extrajudicial killings.”

MANILA, 08 August 2007— Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales will continue serving as Archbishop of Manila following an invitation of Pope Benedict XVI for him to continue his pastoral duty even if he reached his retirement age. The Apostolic Nunciature in the Philippines, in a letter forwarded to Rosales, said that the Holy Father had received his resignation letter but the Pope was inviting him “to continue his ministry.”

The Pope’s letter was read Wednesday at the Mass for the advance celebration of Rosales’ birthday with the Manila clergy at the Arzobispado de Manila.

KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines, June 22 (UCAN) -- Relatives and friends of a former Church employee killed with his wife last year hope the two will not become just additional names on a long list of unsolved killings.

Father Peter Geremia told UCA News the National Bureau of Investigation sent him and the family of George and Maricel Vigo a report last year, saying a "very influential person" was behind the couple's death.

It took a lot of discernment before I finally decided to lie out my sentiments and write something about an ugly incident that happened to me at GSIS during a routine government transaction.

Much as I wanted to bury the ruckus under the list of "experiences," I felt that I needed to say my piece here to finally attain my peace.

As a good civil servant, I was just following the drudgery of a simple GSIS procedure like applying for an E-Card Plus – another requirement for all government employees – when suddenly; a very routine procedure went awry and downright bizarre!

15 June 2007— A Commission of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) lambasted President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyos’ commutation of convicted child rapist Romeo Jalosjos’ two life sentences.

Rodolfo Diamante, executive secretary of the CBCP-Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care (ECPPC), said the decision clearly demonstrate the "bias" of the present administration for known political allies.

Rome (AsiaNews) – The underground bishop of Zhengding (Hebei), Msgr. Giulio Jia Zhiguo, was arrested by police last June 5th. This is the ninth time that the prelate has been arrested since 2004. The episode was reported by the American Kung Foundation, as association which fights for religious freedom in China.

In a message for the celebration of the 109th anniversary of Philippine Independence, CBCP president Archbishop Angel Lagdameo stressed the said issues that continue to haunt the current administration are “negative” notes to the celebration of Independence Day.
