Bula, Camarines Sur – (March 28) A high ranking officer of the New Peoples Army (NPA) died in an encounter with the Philippine Army  in a remote area of this town as government troops verified a report from civilians that the armed rebel group celebrated their founding anniversary.

Died from several gunshot wounds was Vicente Avocado also known as “Ka Tony” and “Ka Persie,” the Secretary General of Front Committee 74 of the New Peoples Army operating in the first district and fourth district of this province including the town of Bula.

Naga City - (March 29)  A Bikolano made it to the top ten among  the passers of the 2007 Bar Examination  held  last September  at the De la Salle University  in Manila.     Atty. John Michael Galauran was ranked fifth in the recent Bar Examination given by the Supreme Court with an average grade of 81.09 percent.

NAGA CITY (Mar. 29) – Despite a city resolution issued by the Sangguniang Panlungsod urging citizens of this city to observe "Earth Hour" tonight, most Nagueños ignored the city government's efforts.

"Earth Hour" is a global campaign initiated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Australia held annually to promote energy-conservation and highlight the problems brought by global warming. Participants are encouraged to turn off non-essential lights and appliances from 8 PM to 9 PM on a set date in an effort to reduce electricity consumption.

Maico Julia, head of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Naga Field Office, said today that as stated in Comelec Resolution No. 8300, public school teachers who served as members of the Board of Election Tellers during the Oct. 29 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Elections are entitled to receive the amount provided for by the resolution.

Daet, Camarines Norte. The DENR – Camarines Norte launched the “20 Million Seedling Production Program- Tree for Life Project” Urban Parks/ Areas Mass Planting at Brgy. Bibirao, Daet last November 14.

The DENR – Camarines Norte was the host province for the Regional Launching of the Urban Areas Mass Tree Planting. Participants from different NGOs, private and government agencies, academe and LGUs within the province composed of 1,257 planters simultaneously planted some 7,423 seedlings of Narra and caballero in their respective urban parks/ areas.

NAGA CITY (Nov. 16) – Police investigators here are nearing the completion of their investigation into the fatal Jollibee Panganiban robbery two weeks ago. Metrobank security guard Rowenel Gavarra died from multiple gunshot wounds after being shot by the armed suspects. The fast-food chain's security guard, Joey Robarios, was also shot but survived the incident. Gavarra was with an employee of Metrobank, picking up around Php 212,000 in cash from the said establishment. The eight robbers were able to escape with the money by motorcycle.

Iriga City - Mt. Iriga, known to the Irigueños as Mt. Asog, a popular destination for mountain climbers, home to some 3,500 Aeta aborigines in the Rinconada district of Camarines Sur, now poses a threat to the lives and dwellings of some 80,000 local residents living in at least nine barangays of the 36 villages in this city.

Daet, Camarines Norte—A new airline company is starting regular flights from this capital town to Manila and vice-versa sometime at the end of November this month, simultaneous with the town hosting of the 2nd WORLD ART EXPERIENCE participated by various national artists from December 10-15 this year.

Daet Mayor Tito Sarion bared that SouthEast Asian Airlines (SEAIR) president Avelina Zapanta signified interest to revive the airline service in Daet town during the National Tourism and Business Summit held here last August.

Naga City (November 14) - City officials here urged for the creation of a local police force under the supervision of the mayor to serve as augmentation force in maintaining peace and order in the locality.

While attending the senate hearing on peace and order crisis involving the City, City Mayor Jesse Robredo said that this idea presented itself as an alternative solution to similar problems that any locality will confront.

Legazpi City - Because of the heavy rains and flooding in the Bikol Region in the last days of October, highway works at the Andaya National Highway have been suspended for more than a week.

Field density tests are said to be required to determine whether the ground will allow the continuation of the concreting works in the road sections in Lupi and Del Gallego towns, all along the route of the Andaya Highway connecting Bikol to Quezon.

Naga City – Several Punong Barangay candidates and kagawads supported by Mayor Jesse Robredo were defeated during the recently concluded October 29 elections.

Four of Robredo’s supported candidates as Punong barangay lost to their opponents while some of his incumbents who ran as kagawads were defeated by a large margin of votes.

Legazpi City – Department of Tourism (DOT) regional director Maria “Nini” Ravaanilla aired her protest that a recent travel advisory of the Austrian Government to avoid Bikol in ther travel plans in the country due to rebel attacks, “will definitely hurt the local tourism in this region,” Ravanilla said.

NAGA CITY (Nov. 4) – The Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections held last Monday was generally "peaceful" according to Commision on Elections Officer Atty. Maico Julia.

Atty. Julia disclosed that the local Comelec field office encountered few, if any, problems in the city during the elections. He said that majority of complaints directed to the Comelec were the "usual problems" like missing names in the voters' lists.
