Diliman, Quezon City- The Bikol literary circle and the avid supporters of this artistic renaissance in the region has another reason to celebrate in the winning of Kristian Sendon Cordero in the Maningning Miclat Poetry Prize (Filipino Category) last September 24, 2009 at the Abelardo Hall of the University of the Philippines.

Cordero, a graduate school student of Ateneo de Manila University, joins other two winners, Mikael de lara Co for the English and Chen Liang from Fujian Province for the Chinese category respectively.

LEGAZPI CITY (3 October)- DESPITE BEING SPARED FROM THE DIRECT ROUTE of tropical storm "Pepeng" which was packing some 195km. per/hour winds, the affected provinces of Catanduanes, Albay, Camarines Sur, and Camarines Norte had an estimated 200,000 evacuees crowd their evacuation centers due to the typhoon's heavy rains, the office of the Civil Defense base in Camp Ola here reported on Friday (October 2).

AROROY, Masbate, Sept. 24- After years of being hooked to nose-irritating kerosene lamps, households in a remote mountainous village of this gold-rich town have recently realized the dream of shifting to electricity for their lights.

The power comes from a generator provided by the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) project of the government being implemented through various agencies led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 25 (PNA) - Government forces killed nine rebels in separate fierce engagements with a band of New People's Army (NPA) in villages in the provinces of Albay and Sorsogon, the Philippine Army (PA) said Friday morning.

One of the fierce firefights occurred in the town of Pilar in Sorsogon, where eight NPA rebels died while the other one was in Manito, Albay where one rebel was killed.

NAGA CITY (September 22, 2009) - - WITH THE CONCLUSION OF THE PEÑAFRANCIA FIESTA, Bicol PNP Regional Director, Chief Supt. Ruben E. Padua commended Police Supt. Tomasito Clet, head of the City Police District Office for the orderly celebration of the Peñafrancia festivities recently held here, and for reducing street crimes during the festivities by as much as 80% percent.

City Police District Office spokesman, PO3 Tobias Bongon, said the result of the police preventive efforts against crime during the festivities was "phenomenal."

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 19, 2009-The local Church in Catanduanes is up in arms in opposition to the proposed mining operations in the province claiming the activity will lead to environmental destruction.

Virac Bishop Manolo Delos Santos registered his flock's opposition to the proposed mining operations in Catanduanes at a public hearing conducted by the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee chaired by Senator Jamby Madrigal at Pepperland Hotel, this city, to investigate a mining contract granted to a mining company without public consultation.

NAGA CITY, Sept. 20, 2009-Thousands of devotees, armed with rosaries, lighted candles and white handkerchiefs lined up the opposite banks of Naga River from midday to early evening yesterday shouting "Viva La Virgen!" and "Viva Divino Rostro".

Traffic stood still along the city's main roads as several thousands of devotees regionwide joined the procession of the region's patroness.

NAGA CITY - An army corporal was shot dead by one of his militia man in Barangay Calagascas in San Fernando, Camarines Sur early evening on Saturday, police report said on Sunday.

Corporal Jaime Ramos was shot by Cesar Rentoria, 29, member of Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (Cafgu), at about 7:30 in the evening, SPO4 Elmer Coros of San Fernando police told the Inquirer.

Rentoria, a resident of Barangay Pipian of the same town, surrendered to the police Sunday morning accompanied by family members.

ROME, Sept. 15, 2009-- Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair told L'Osservatore Romano this week that religion, and concretely the Catholic Church, as "a crucial role in the development" of nations and is always oriented towards achieving the common good.

The son of a militant atheist and a Protestant mother, Blair recounted his path to conversion and said it began long ago when he met his wife. "The faith has always been an important part of our life as a family," he said.

GUINOBATAN, Albay, Sept. 16 - Suspected communist guerillas attempting to rescue a ranking Bikol communist rebel ambushed Wednesday a police convoy securing the rebel leader along the Maharlika Highway in said town in Albay.

The Guinobatan town Philippine National Police (PNP) station said a band of communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels failed an attempt to rescue Iglecerio Pernia alias Ka Choi, a ranking Bikol NPA leader, who is currently detained at the Albay Provincial Jail here.

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 16 - The Albay Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) on Wednesday said that disaster preparedness action plan is now in place and ready for implementation in the event Mayon volcano's exhibits possible signs of an eruption.

Albay Governor Joey Salceda, PDCC chairman, said disaster operating scenarios have been drawn up and ready for execution in times the volcano's abnormal behavior turns worst.

NAGA CITY-Participants of the Bikol regional military parade competition missed either old friends or old foes.

Several Catholic schools in the region, including the Jesuit-run Ateneo De Naga University, did not join the military parade this year because the parade was held within the nine-day festivities in honor of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
