A local environmental group has expressed its support of the Bikol bishops' opposition to the ongoing mining operations at Rapu-rapu, Albay. PANGATAMAN-Bikol (Bicol Center for Environmental Protection) external vice-president Engr. Virgilio Perdigon, says his group "welcome[s] and support[s] this letter to the Pope by the bishops because it is a way to highlight the environmental degradation being experienced by the island of Rapu-rapu and also the whole region as well."

Albay Province (16 April) -- The Aboitiz Power Corp., the holding company for the Aboitiz Group's in power generation and distribution, is close to taking over the Tiwi geothermal power facilities next month following its down payment of 40 percent or P8 billion from the company's internally generated funds.

Located in the municipality of Tiwi, this province, the Tiwi geothermal power facilities and assets were previously owned by the government-run National Power Corporation. The power plant can generate up to 289 megawatts (mW) of power.

VATICAN, April 20, 2009-- "Galileo and the Vatican" is the title of a new book that gathers together the documents of the commission created by Pope John Paul II on the famous Italian scientist and seeks to debunk the black legend and other myths about this case.

In statements to the Mexican news agency Notimex, Cardinal Paul Poupard recalled that John Paul II publicly apologized about Galileo in October of 1992.

LEGAZPI CITY, April 21 (PNA) - PhilHealth Bikol vice president and regional director Orlando Iñigo, Jr. announced that members and dependents can now enjoy the New In-Patient Benefit Package effective this month if they are victims of Salmonella and in conditions when hospitalization is needed.

Iñigo noted that the occurrence of the salmonella alarm in several places in and outside the Philippines scares the public as it displays serious conditions caused by severe infections which are dangerous and could be fatal.

LEGAZPI CITY, April 21 (PNA) - Bicol Regional Development Council and Albay Governor Joey Salceda has urged the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) to restore the construction of Pantao Port project in Libon, Albay.

"The point is the province is taking a strong stand that should make Pantao port an integral part of economic development," Salceda said.

According to the governor, the provincial government is working hard to get Pantao port restored.

"The two roads, Libon Pnato and Ligao - Pioduran are vital signs of our continuing commitment to the project," he said.

SORSOGON CITY, April 23 (PNA) -- The shellfish ban remains hoisted in Sorsogon Bay with still high concentration of red tide organism, according to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

BFAR has recently issued a shellfish bulletin that included anew Sorsogon Bay and Juag Lagoon in Matnog town, this province, as among the bodies of water where the shellfish ban is imposed.

MANILA, April 23 (PNA) -- The Court of Appeals (CA) has acquitted United States Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel Smith of rape charges filed against him by Suzette "Nicole" Nicolas, thus reversing the earlier ruling of the Makati City Regional Trial Court (RTC) of life imprisonment for the US serviceman.

Three women justices of the CA 11th Division, namely: Associate Justices Monina Arevalo-Zenarosa, Remedios Salazar-Fernando and Myrna Dimaranan-Vidal issued the decision on Smith.

The three CA justices were convinced that no rape was committed.

That the Bikol bishops as a group have decided to publicly oppose the persistent and ongoing mining operations at Rapu-rapu Island in Albay, even to the extent of writing a letter of appeal for support from the Pope, underscores the gravity of the present evil they are battling. Our communities need to join in this campaign to stop mining at Rapu-rapu.

The bishops’ letter categorically condemned the “intransigence of the Philippine Government” in allowing the continued mining operations at Rapu-rapu, despite “[the] findings of many scientific investigations that declared the island unsuitable for mining because of the potential ecological damage it can bring into the island.”

MANILA, April 24 -The 23 Filipino crew of the chemical tanker "M/T Stolt Strength," are now navigating supposedly on safe waters in the Indian Ocean after they were released by Somali pirates on April 20, the Department of Foreign Affairs said today.

The foreign affairs department said that the vessel and its crew even received bunkering assistance.
