  • Legazpi City (27 August) -- The province of Albay has enjoined all sectors to support and pray for the victims of Monday's bloody hostage crisis.

    "In response to the hostage crisis, the Provincial Government of Albay, local Catholic Church, Filipino-Chinese community, Catholic schools, city government here and other local government units will hold simultaneous Mass Offering with special intentions for the Hong Kong nationals hostage victims, both for those who perished and survived," Albay Governor Joey Salceda said.

  • Legazpi City (18 August) -- Errol John Suarez of the Bicol University Integrated Laboratory School (BU-ILS)has notched one of the gold medals of the 136 medals and merit awards hauled by the Philippine team to the just concluded 2010 Singapore International Mathematics Competition (SIMC).

    Dr. Simon Chua, president of the Mathematics Trainers' Guild (MTG) Philippines and head of the country's delegation, said Suarez joined the team of young Filipino mathematicians who placed second overall to China which won a total of 282 medals in the 10-nation contest held August 6-10, 2010.

  • Legazpi City (11 August) -- Albay has received from Japanese government an additional grant of P944-million, now bringing to P1.284-billion the single-country total assistance intended for the establishment of calamity-control facilities in the province.

    Albay officials and representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) had signed here Thursday (August 5) the memorandum of agreement (MOA) of some P944-million grant to be used in the construction of evacuation buildings and flood-forecasting facilities in the province's disaster-prone areas.

  • Legazpi City (23 July) -- The Department of Health (DOH) in Bicol has declared a malaria epidemic in Camarines Norte after 182 residents of one town in the province were stricken by the mosquito-borne disease.

    Camilo Aquino, DOH Bicol Malaria Prevention and Control Program coordinator, bared Malaria cases were recorded in Jose Panganiban town, though the agency has declared an epidemic in the entire province to alert all local officials on the need to take immediate steps to prevent the spread of the disease.

  • Legazpi City (9 July) -- All government workers are starting to receive their second tranche of salary increase under the Salary Standardization Law III effective June 24, 2010 pursuant to EO No.900 of the previous administration.

    Assistant Regional Director Angelita Cells of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) in Bikol has assured government workers in Region V that the corresponding cash requirement for their salary increase will be released as part of the cash program for the second half of the year.
