Naga City (29 October) - In urging the local Catholic faithful to choose morally upright candidates and shun those "greedy for power and money," Caceres Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi criticized the re-districting of the province of Camarines Sur and the politicians behind this.

In his homily last October 25, Archbishop Legaspi decried how some candidates present themselves as committed to serve the country, but after sitting in office intend only to serve themselves and take advantage of the people.

LEGAZPI CITY, Oct. 27  - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) is closely monitoring Mt. Mayon after a lava dome was seen developing at the volcano's crater on Tuesday.

Phivolcs scientists said magmatic materials might be intruding at the volcano's crater vent that led to the building of a lava dome at Mt. Mayon's crater rim.

The development of a lava dome is a sign that magma is pushing its way to the volcano's summit and might lead to a major eruption.

LEGAZPI CITY, Oct. 27  - The provincial government of Albay is now working for a massive build-up on disaster response capability to secure the zero casualty goal.

"We have acquired 13 new rubber boats amounting to P5.5 million, nine units of ambulances worth P3.4 million and 1,000 public address systems, (P6 million at P6,000 each) to boost our disaster response," the governor said.

MANILA - When President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued Executive Order No. 839 on October 23 ordering oil companies to roll back pump prices in areas affected by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng to October 15 levels, the Big Three - Petron, Caltex, and Shell - warned of supply shortages and negative effects in planned investments. They did comply, albeit grudgingly, by lowering prices in Luzon but increasing pump prices in Visayas and Mindanao.

MANILA, Oct. 29, 2009- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has accredited the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) as its citizen's arm for the May 2010 elections.

In an en banc resolution dated Oct. 26, the Comelec noted that for the past several years, the Catholic Church-backed poll watchdog has consistently worked for credible elections.

"The petitioner's participation during the past electoral exercises and its commitment towards honest, clean, credible and peaceful elections are commendable," the resolution read.

Naga City (29 October) - Annoyed by rumors that some priests in his jurisdiction are being enjoined to run for public office, Caceres Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi declared in a homily that priests in the Archdiocese of Caceres are forbidden from seeking public posts this coming May 2010 Elections.

In a homily delivered last 25 October, Archbishop Legaspi said the Code of Canon Law is clear in forbidding clerics from "assum[ing] public office which entail participation in the exercise of civil power."

MANILA, Oct. 26, 2009-Father Michael Sinnott, an elderly Columban missionary kidnapped in Southern Philippines, has won praise for his courage from Pope Benedict XVI.

In a tribute on World Mission Day last Oct. 18 in the Vatican, the pope hailed the frail 79-year old priest's work even in the face of terrible danger.

Addressing a crowd of thousands, he recalled the work of Catholic missionaries around the world who serve the weakest people, sometimes at the risk of their own lives.

In a Training Conference on Human Rights of Women in Southeast Asia sponsored by the Swedish International Development Agency, a representative from the United Nations Human Rights Council introduced this mechanism called the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

Thus, when former president Joseph "Erap" Estrada announced, at the end of a 30-minute speech, that he would run for president again, nobody was surprised. Every one was expecting it even if the majority opinion is that his running for reelection violates the 1987 Constitution.
