GMA-7 paid tribute to the late Comedy King Dolphy through a necrological service last Saturday, July 14 at the Heritage Park, Taguig, before he was finally laid to rest the following day. Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, Chairman and CEO of GMA Network, Inc., said in his eulogy that despite not being a talent of the Network, GMA “embraces him as an authentic entertainment icon [who] belongs to all the people.”

Red tide kills a minor, poisons 12 others

PILI, CAMARINES SUR—Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Bicol director Dennis Del Socorro released a report that Red Tide toxin in contaminated shellfish has caused the death of a 5- years old child and caused 12 other residents of Sitio Bongcana, barangay Paraiso in Milagros, Masbate to be hospitalized from poisoning .

In an effort to curb the transport of contaminated shellfish out of Milagros, BFAR reinstalled check points in main highways in Masbate province.

Shellfish is a major fishery product in Milagros town.

Scuffle over mining in Camarines Norte turning violent

DAET, Camarines Norte (July 13, 2012) - The continuing conflict over illegal mining in this province has gone beyond war of words when a small-scale mining financier was shot to death early evening of Wed.(July 11) in sitio Matahimik, barangay Palanas, Paracale town where the MGB-DENR had implemented a mining ban since early this year.

Camarines Norte Police director Senior Supt. Jose Lipa Capinpin identified the victim as Sammy Amargo, a resident of sitio Maligaya, Palanas and a known financier of small-scale mining in this locality.

The CamSur conundrum

Based on 2003 data of the National Statistical Coordination Board, CamSur was the third poorest province in the Bicol Region with poverty incidence of 38.3%. The poorest of all was Masbate with 50.2% of its population living below poverty line while Camarines Norte was second with poverty incidence of 40.7%.

13 communist rebels die in clashes with army soldiers

FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City (June 30 2012) - A total of thirteen communist rebels were killed in two separate clashes with Army soldiers today. The first clash erupted in Mambog village, Botolan town in Zambales at around 5:30am involving the troops of the 24th Infantry Battalion led by Lt Col Michael Samson against 12 heavily armed rebels who were conducting extortion activities in the village. Two rebels were killed after the 20-minute clash, while the rest of the rebels scampered away towards various directions. A certain Lito Collado a.k.a. Ka Warry sustained a bullet wound in his leg and was evacuated by the soldiers towards a local hospital.

Police director sacked over mining issues

DAET, Camarines Norte (June 30, 2012) - The sacking of the Camarines Norte provincial police chief now appears to have been ordered from the national leadership because of the latter's failure to stop mining operations in the province. This week, the Philippine National Police (PNP) Camp Crame office installed Supt. Jose L. Capinpin as officer-in-charge of the Camarines Norte Provincial Police Office (PPO) in replacement of former Police director Senior Supt. Joselito Esquivel.
