PNR has no liability in Iriga mishap, says station manager

NAGA CITY (June 24, 2012) – “THE PHILIPPINE Railways (PNR) has no liability,” said PNR Naga central Station manager Constancio Toledano on the death of at least five persons, two of them minors, during Friday morning ( June 22) train collision with an over loaded tricycle at a railroad crossing at barangay San Isidro and San Agustin in Iriga City.

However, Toledano said the railway agency is willing to extend financial assistance to the families of the victims.

State of calamity declared in Catanduanes as cholera suspects mount to 3390

LEGAZPI CITY – The Provincial Government of Catanduanes has declared a province-wide state of calamity after 19 deaths were reported in the past one week out of the 3,390 identified cases of possible cholera.

Most of the patients suffering from diarrhea with various degree of dehydration are confined at the Inter-Bicol Medical Center of Catanduanes in the Capital town of Virac.

Eight fatalities have been reported in Virac, 6 in San Andres, 3 in Pandan and 1 in Viga

Independence: Restart with a new flag

It's Independence Day once again. We ask as always when we salute the Flag that symbolizes our Nation: Are we really independent?

Have we been doomed by our own Act of Proclamation of Independence of the Filipino People that declared "independence" as a new Nation, but one under the protection of the United States of America which country in fact did not then recognize us?

To add insult to injury, America then bought our country for $20 million dollars from Spain through the 1898 US-Spain Treaty of Paris--to the exclusion of the Philippines.

Cities to face sharply rising costs for garbage treatment

WASHINGTON, June 6, 2012 —A new, far-reaching report on the state of municipal solid waste around the world predicts a sharp rise in the amount of garbage generated by urban residents between now and 2025. The report estimates the amount of municipal solid waste (MSW) will rise from the current 1.3 billion tonnes/year to 2.2 billion tonnes/year, with much of the increase coming in rapidly growing cities in developing countries. The annual cost of solid waste management is projected to rise from the current $205 billion to $375 billion, with cost increasing most severely in low income countries.
