Aquino not doing enough to arrest Palparan, says priest

MANILA, May 24, 2012— A Catholic priest and human rights advocate expressed dissatisfaction with the Aquino administration’s actions, or lack of it, to arrest fugitive retired Major Gen. Jovito Palparan.

Solidarity Philippines lead convenor Fr. Joe Dizon criticized the slow pace of manhunt for Palparan, and accused the government of not doing enough effort into arresting the general.

He also chided the government’s failure to arrest two other high profile fugitives, former Palawan Gov. Joel Reyes and Dinagat Island Rep. Ruben Ecleo.

MANILA, Philippines (May 25 2012) - Answering to questions by Senator-judges, Chief Justice Renato Corona admitted to owning four dollar accounts totalling $2.4 million and justified its non-inclusion in any of his Statement of Asses and Liabiliies (SALN) by citing the Foreign Currency Deposit (FCD) Law that he claims protects the absolute confidentiality of foreign-denominated bank deposits.

Growth in developing East Asia and Pacific is strong but slowing

Tokyo, May 23, 2012 - Growth remains strong in developing East Asia and Pacific, although it has slowed from its post-crisis peaks. With the global slowdown expected to continue, the region needs to reduce its reliance on exports and find new sources of growth, says the World Bank in its latest East Asia and Pacific Economic Update released today.

Corona's non-appearance cuts short trial session, but verdict out Tuesday

MANILA, Philippines (May 23 2012) - Today's session, the 41st trial day of the impeachment case against Justice Renato Corona, lasted only 25 minutes after the respondent failed to attend for medical reason.

But the historic imeachment trial appear to be on the homestretch as presiding judge Senate President Juan Enrile set the oral arguments on Monday and the verdict may be out Tuesday.

Enrile ruled that the defense team can present Corona and its evidence for the defense of the chief magistrate at 2 p.m. Friday.

Rebel attack in Albay airport costs contractor P100 million

LEGAZPI CITY – In a public statement on Monday (May 21), Party list “AKO BICOL” strongly condemned the rebel attack Friday’s(May 18) at the construction site of the proposed Bicol International Airport in Alobo, Daraga, Albay, that caused damages to its contractor, Sunwest Construction and Development Corporation, topping P100-Million.

Twelve units of heavy equipment worth millions of pesos were torched by suspected communist rebels at the newly constructed airstrip .

Governor Salceda calls for boycott of China products

LEGAZPI CITY (May 22, 2012) – Albay Governor Joey Sarte Salceda renewed his call to step-up the boycott of “China made products” as a way of sending a strong message that the Filipinos must stand united against foreign threats to the nation’s sovereign territory and dignity.

Salceda said, “since June last year, I have never stopped to boycott China made products because the Chinese government can never be trusted,” the Governor said.
