Post-Corona SC approves full disclosure of SALNs of justices and judges

MANILA, Philippines - A day after the Senate impeachment court convicted Chief Justice Renato Corona for non-disclosure of his assets, including his dollar accounts, in his statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN), the Supreme Court sitting en banc approves in principle the full disclosure of the SALNs of justices and judges.

Before the guilty verdict was handed down, the SC issued an order barring the Senate impeachment court from scrutinizing the SALN of Corona during the early part of the trial.

CBCP urges more transparency from gov’t leaders

MANILA, May 30, 2012— The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has called on government leaders to be more transparent with their assets following the removal from office of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Acknowledging that the Aquino administration is trying to root out corruption in the government, Archbishop Jose Palma, CBCP president, emphasized that good government starts with honesty and transparency.

MANILA, May 30, 2012―Now that the impeachment trial is over, it’s time for everyone to move on and put the interest of the country forward, the head of the country’s Catholic bishops said.

Even as the trial has brought division among Filipinos, now is the time for opposing camps to reach out to one another in a spirit of friendship and put the good of the country ahead of personal interest, according to Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines president and Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

‘Corona’s conviction should serve as lesson’

MANILA, May 29, 2012— The removal of Chief Justice Renato Corona from his position should serve as a lesson for all public officials, a ranking Catholic bishop said.

Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, said that transparency and the virtue of honesty should be the foremost lessons political leaders should learn from Corona.

“The law invoked applies not only to the Chief Justice but also on all public officials. It is lesson for all,” Lagdameo said.

MANILA, Philippines (May 30 2012) - In a lopsided decision that suprised both the prosecutor and the defense, the Senate sitting as impeachment court voted 20-3 to convict Chief Justice Renato Corona of betrayal of public trust by failure to disclose all his assets, effectively removing him from his position and disqualifying him from holding a government position for the rest of his life.

Prelates confident of impeachment trial’s positive effect

MANILA, May 27, 2012—Some Catholic prelates expressed optimism that the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona would teach appropriate lessons to everyone in government service.

Bacolod Bishop Vicente M. Navarra told CBCPOnline Radio, that "God allowed these events to happen so that the evil done and the evil intent of men will be uncovered and Truth will come out and Justice is vindicated."
