Albay welcomes Queen Sofia of Spain

LEGAZPI CITY (July 3, 2012) --Officials in Albay led by Governor Joey Sarte Salceda are all set to receive her Majesty Queen Sofia of the Kingdom of Spain who shall visit the province tomorrow (July 4).

The Queen Sofia shall visit several sites in Albay where the Spanish Government gave various development cooperation projects.

Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Bicol director Bernardo Rafaelito R. Alejandro IV, who is coordinating the Queen’s visit in behalf of the Department of National Defense, said the Queen’s visit in Albay will last for 7 ½ hours.

According to Alejandro, Queen Sofia’s visit here shall be highlighted byt the unveiling at a Legazpi City park of the life-size statue of Jose Maria Peñaranda, the last Spanish Governor-general of Albay.

The Queen will also visit the evacuation centers in Camalig and Ligao, Albay that are being supported by the Spanish Government benefitting evacuees of Mt. Mayon erruption and the disastrous typhoon “Reming” in 2006.

The visit will also include the Queen’s inauguration of a Dialysis facility at the Josefina Belmonte Durante Memorial Hospital and another visit at the Climate Change Academy, a research and educational center on climate change established by Gov. Salceda.

Yesterday, an advance party from the Spanish Consulate arrived in Albay to check on the sites to be visited by the Spanish Royalty.
