VATICAN CITY, APRIL 24, 2010 (Zenit.org).- In his Easter message, Benedict XVI contrasted the joy of the Resurrection with the sufferings and "painful situations" that continue to afflict mankind, such as natural disasters, poverty, illness and war.

Before imparting his blessing "urbi et orbi" (to the city of Rome and the world), the Pope noted that at Easter "the hosts of angels, saints and blessed souls join with one voice in our exultant song. [...] But alas, it is not so on earth!"

Church leaders repeatedly advised the faithful against the traditional corporal punishment and crucifixion re-enactments that mark the occassion. But thousands of Filipinos refused to listen and whipped themselves on the streets of villages around the country.

President Benigno Aquino said yesterday he is willing to risk excommunication from the Catholic Church rather than scrap the Responsible Parenthood (RP) Bill.

“I remain committed to pushing for the introduction of a law for responsible parenthood….  At risk of excommunication, it is my obligation as a leader,” Aquino told graduates from the University of the Philippines.

Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma said many Filipinos will not allow such idea especially those victims of human rights violations under the Marcos dictatorship.

“I’m a Filipino citizen and I’m against it. We know how massive the human rights abuses during the Marcos regime,” Ledesma said.

Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez said Japan’s situation should serve as an ample warning to the Philippine government to totally give up plans to resurrect BNPP.

“What is happening in Japan confirmed our fear even before up to now that’s why we oppose plans to revive the nuclear plant in Bataan,” Iñiguez said.

On March 11, an 8.9-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan and a lengthy series of aftershocks sent enormous waves up to two miles inland in some low-lying areas, uprooting houses and obliterating entire towns.

Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales and other prelates will be leading the ‘grandmother’ of all rallies against the reproductive health (RH) bill at the Quirino Grandstand on March 25.

The church leaders have joined with other anti-RH bill advocacy groups to press lawmakers to reject the proposed measure.
