  • LIGAO CITY (Nov. 11) - Elements of the Philippine Army (PA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) collared on Tuesday a ranking member of the communist movement in a remote village in this city, an Army official told the Philippines News Agency, Wednesday.

    Army and PNP operatives arrested Miguel Pedrateja alias Mike, a native of this city, in his safehouse in barangay Nabunton, a remote village 10 kilometers from this city.

  • As of December last year, a total of 8,495 hectares of open and denuded forest lands have been rehabilitated within the Bicol River Basin, The Department of Environment and Natural Resources said.

    Aside from this, some 111 kilometers river banks were also rehabilitated, and under a structural measures, 2,738.5 cubic meters gabion/check dams, 2,699 linear meters eco-blocks and nine (9) units small water impounding system were constructed.

  • CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur, Dec. 9 -- Army troopers recovered from an abandoned safe house on Tuesday a cache of high powered firearms and ammunition in a remote village in Mandaon town in Masbate, report reaching the 9th Army Infantry Division said Wednesday.

    The soldiers were on combat and retrieval operation after villagers tipped off military authorities of the presence of unidentified armed group in the area.

  • MANILA, Dec. 31- The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) received a US$ 100,000 (about P47 million) from the United States Government in immediate disaster relief assistance to families displaced by Mayon volcano in Albay province, who are now in evacuation centers.

    PNRC officials led by Chairman Sen. Richard J. Gordon and secretary general Gwendolyn Pang confirmed this to early Thursday. They thanked the US government for the help.

  • MADRID, Spain, May 4, 2010--The organizers for World Youth Day 2011 have released the list of the patron saints for the event, which "encompasses the history of the Church in Spain, from the first saints of Madrid."

    According to a press release, "The Holy See has confirmed the proposal of the patron saints for World Youth Day (WYD): St. Isidore, St. John of the Cross, St. Maria de la Cabeza, St. John of Avila, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Rose of Lima, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Rafael Arnaiz and St. Francis Xavier."

  • MANILA, Jan. 23, 2010- Pope Benedict XVI called on Filipino bishops to work for the sanctification of priests, so that they may be able to fulfill their mission in the church and in modern world.

    In a letter to the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, the pontiff said that bishops have a major role to play on how priests would exercise their pastoral functions.

    He said a bishop's role is to sanctify, and in order to do this one must first tend to his own holiness of life.

Finally, nine days after the inauguration of  Noynoy Aquino as new Philippine President, spokesman Edwin Lacierda announced today that, indeed, Jesse M. Robredo is the new DILG secretary. President Aquino signed Robredo's appointment yesterday.
