  • LEGAZPI CITY--Calls to consolidate efforts by multisectoral groups against the planned US-RP Balikatan military exercises this April, has snowballed following a three-day rally held here.

    Diocese of Legazpi spokesman, Rev. Fr. Rex Orjona said parishes will continue to document people’s reactions to Balikatan exercises and the possible human violations that go with it.

  • TIGAON, CAMARINES SUR—PATROLING government troopers clash anew with communist rebels in remote barangay San Ramon, Pamplona, Cam. Sur, the 42nd Infantry Battalion, PA, which has jurisdiction over this province reported on Tues. (Nov. 16).

    42nd Infantry Battalion commanding officer, Lt. Col. Ernesto Cruz revealed that a 9-man squad of his unit led by 2nd Lt. Mariel Bonilla encountered 10 communist rebels in a 5-minute fire-fight when army troopers were fired upon by the rebels at the said vicinity.

  • DUMAGUETE CITY, Nov. 18 - The operation of the Small Town Lottery (STL) will only be allowed if the local government unit concerned will allow it, according to Secretary Jessie Robredo of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

    Robredo’s clarification comes in the wake of reports that the operation of STL is being forced by the government while keeping the numbers game "jueteng" illegal.

    Robredo, however, admits that there is a problem in Metro Manila, where STL has apparently become the legal cover for jueteng.

  • NAGA CITY- A welcome competitor put 'padyak' (pedicab) drivers in Naga City on a day-off last August 15.

    Along with four kids and a city councilor, Senator Manuel "Mar" Roxas drove a pedicab through the streets of downtown Naga, to the surprise and delight of curious onlookers, some of which exclaimed, "Nagpapadyak talaga si Kuya Mar! (Kuya Mar really knows how to drive pedicab!)

  • MANILA, June 26, 2009-If A(H1N1) cases in the country turn worse, church authorities are bent on taking "drastic" measures to thwart its further spread.

    The flu pandemic has tapped the country's deep religious sentiment, but to avoid spreading infection some dioceses had to ban close contacts among churchgoers.

    At least four archdioceses-Manila, Jaro, Lingayen-Dagupan and Cebu-have already asked their priests to give communion hosts by hand to parishioners.

    The restrictions are to stay in force until local church authorities advise otherwise.
