  • LEGAZPI CITY, March 23  -- The Bicol International Airport project in Barangay Alobo here recently received an additional P23 million to complete its right-of-way acquisition which has so far attained close to a 75 percent mark of accomplishment.

    The amount is on top of the P82 million earlier released by Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) to compensate the land owners whose property the new airport will occupy.

  • QUEZON CITY, Philippines (UCAN) -- Filipino national hero Jose Rizal died 113 years ago but the controversy over his alleged heresies still rages.

    This year, blogs and newspaper editorials continued the debate on the issue.

    In one discussion forum, one post said that, if true, it is "sad ... that the cradle of Catholicism in Asia is honoring as national hero, a Catholic heretic."

  • LEGAZPI CITY, Dec. 4 --Mt. Mayon's edifice continue to bulge on Friday, an indication that the volcano's condition is still on a restive state that may lead to a possible explosive eruption.

    The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in its recent aerial and ground deformation surveys indicated that the volcano's edifice was still inflated in the two leveling sites of the 2,450 meters high volcano.

  • Eight students from the University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP) joined more than a hundred delegates from 21 schools and universities in the recently concluded 10th Regional Tertiary Schools Press Conference, held at Villa Mila Garden Resort, Daet, Camarines Norte.

    The occasion was spearheaded by the Bicol Association of Tertiary Press Advisers, Bicol Association of Student Campus Writers and Commission on Higher Education and was sponsored by the Bicol Association of Tertiary Press Advisers.  Mabini Colleges was this year's host school for the said event.

  • LEGAZPI CITY, June 17 -- Bicol Regional Development Council (RDC) chairman and Albay Governor Joey S. Salceda assailed the decision to raise the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) toll fees which, he said, is tantamount to curtailment of trade and freedom to travel.

    "Being a regular user of the SLEX, the 250% toll hike cannot be justified by the physical improvements we feel or likely to see, a far cry, compared to the dramatic changes in NLEX (North Luzon Expressway)," Salceda said.

  • CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur, Jan. 22  - Unidentified armed men shot dead on Thursday a village chieftain of San Jacinto town in Masbate, a Philippine Army official said on Friday.

    Killed was Danny Amor, village chief of Barangay Bartolabac in San Jacinto, Masbate.

    Army Maj. Harold Cabunoc, 9th Infantry Division spokesman, said the incident took place around 8 p.m. on Thursday.

  • MANILA, Jan. 22, 2010- President Arroyo has no power to appoint the next chief justice of the Supreme Court, constitutionalist Fr. Joaquin Bernas, SJ, said Friday.

    Bernas, dean emeritus of the Ateneo Law School, said that Mrs. Arroyo will be violating the Constitution if she would insist in appointing the successor of Chief Justice Reynato Puno.

    The Charter, he said, forbids the President from making appointments within 60 days before her term ends on June 30 this year.

  • LEGASPI City, Dec. 10, 2009- The transfer of Masbate Bishop Joel Z. Baylon to the Diocese of Legazpi brought sadness to his parishioners. But the diocesan clergy suffered another blow when one of its priests died December 8 in a motorcycle accident along the National Highway at Barangay Cayabon, Milagros, Masbate.

    The fatality was identified as Fr. Norman Crisostomo De Jesus, popularly known as "Father Aga," 38 years old and pioneer parish priest of a newly-created parish in Calumpang, Balud, Masbate.

  • LEGAZPI CITY, March 18  - The Albay Council on Reproductive Tract Infection Control (ACRTIC) otherwise known as Albay AIDS Council is determined to pursue its campaign to fight the spread of Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) and HIV here.
    The council is also set to launch the distribution of free condom in various entertainment establishments. It has urged operators or owners of night establishments to make condom available and accessible.

  • LEGAZPI CITY, Jan. 29 - The Naval Forces Southern Luzon in partnership with Office of Civil Defense led anew an outreach project for the victims of Mayon Volcano eruption in response to a call of Albay Governor Joey Salceda for assistance.

    The naval forces distributed rice to displaced families in Amore resettlement area as part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines' and Office of Civil Defense (OCD) joint project dubbed as "TARABANGAN: Sama-sama sa pagtulong para sa mga Biktima ng Bulkang Mayon."
