  • Two stories for children, three essays, four short stories, one 1-act play and eleven collections of poetry are in contention for top honors in the 6th Premio Tomas Arejola para sa Literaturang Bikolnon.

    This was announced by Carlos Arejola, chairman of the Bicol-wide literary competition widely regarded in the literary circle as the region's premiere literary prize.

  • LEGAZPI CITY, Dec. 30, 2009-The provincial government spends at least P1.2 million daily for the upkeep of over 10,000 families who lived in evacuation centers for the past 17 days, since Mayon Volcano began belching ash and lava more than two weeks ago.

    This, according to Albay Governor Jose Sarte Salceda, as he acknowledged the donations received by the Provincial Disaster Management Office from various local and international donors.

  • Legazpi City (21 January) -- The environmental institution PANGATAMAN-Bikol (Bicol Center for Environmental Protection) has enjoined the new bishop of Legazpi to support the fight against mining in Rapu-rapu Island even as it raised the alarm that Lafayette is again gearing to further exploit Rapu-Rapu Island to the detriment of its residents and the environment.

    According to a statement released by the environmental group, Lafayette is already operating in three villages of the island.

  • DAET, Camarines Norte-Representative Liwayway Vinzons-Chato of the lone district of Camarines Norte said Saturday that the House bill proposing to reapportion her province into two districts was "being held hostage" by the House bill that also seeks to reapportion Camarines Sur into five districts.

    "The bill already has been passed in the committee level. But its passage in the plenary level is put at risk by the opposition of a similar bill seeking to reapportion Camarines Sur," said Vinzons-Chato.

  • Some 200 talented local dancers selected from state universities and colleges of the province will be awarded college scholarships by the provincial government of Camarines Sur as part of Gov. LRay's scholarship program for CamSur constituents.

    Dubbed "Search for LRay Dance Scholars," the program is geared at assuring continuing college education for currently enrolled college students as well as for those graduating high school scholars under the aforementioned scholarship program with talent and potential in dancing.

  • MANILA, May 20, 2009-An official of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said that bishops are firm on their position not to favor the amendment of the Constitution.

    Changing the Charter is not necessary in order to institute reforms in the country today.

    "Ulitin ko lang po yung stand nila (na) hindi kinakailangan ang chacha upang baguhin ang ating bansa (at) ating mga tao," stated Msgr. Pedro Quitorio, Media Director of CBCP.

  • DAET, Camarines Norte, Jan. 27 -- All systems go for the Palarong Bikol 2010 in this province set on Feb. 1 to 5.

    Department of Education (DepEd) regional director Celedonio Layon said delegations from the elementary and secondary levels from different provinces and cities across Bikol region are expected to arrive starting Wednesday.

    Prior to the sports competition, organizers slate the rehearsal and pictorial of candidates for Search for Palarong Bikol on Jan. 28; literary, musical and folkdance contest on Jan. 29; and talent competition on Jan. 30.
