  • LEGAZPI CITY (Nov 12) - Mt. Mayon on Thursday laid low after billowing into air three times on Wednesday, which enveloped nine villages in the second and third districts of Albay.

    But local disaster officials are readying mitigating measures in case a full-blown eruptions takes place.

    The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) in Albay said that the volcano disgorged ash clouds three times on Tuesday, it had its first ash explosion at 1:58 a.m. Wednesday and then followed by two more minor ash puffing at 7:02 a.m. and 12:20 p.m.

  • LEGAZPI CITY - More than P2 million worth of illegal forest products were confiscated in Bikol last year, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources reported.

    DENR authorities here said this was due to the strict campaign against illegal logging which resulted in the apprehension and confiscation of 200.109 cubic meters of forest products consisting of round logs, flitches and lumber worth about P2,226,863 and 42 conveyances and 11 chainsaws used in the illegal trade.

  • VATICAN CITY, December 28, 2009--Dominican Father Edward Schillebeeckx, a theologian whose work had a huge impact on the Dutch church, died at the age of 95 Dec. 23 in Nijmegen, Netherlands, where he lived since 1957.

    The Dominican taught in the department of dogmatic and historical theology at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, now known as Radboud University Nijmegen, from 1957 until his retirement in 1983. He served as theological adviser to the Dutch bishops during the Second Vatican Council and was seen as the main inspiration behind the Dutch catechism for adults.

  • CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur A member of the Philippine Army identified as Pfc Romeo Z Daza was shot to death by communist rebels at Brgy Veneracion, Pamplona, Camarines Sur last 29 December.

    Pfc Daza was assigned at Cuco Detachment under Charlie CAFGU Company, 22IB, 9ID, PA based at Brgy Cuco, Pasacao, Camarines Sur. He suffered three gunshot wounds in the chest and two in the head that immediately resulted to his death. His remains were later brought to Bicol Medical Center.

  • The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has lowered the alert level on Mayon Volcano from four (4) to three (3) after the government agency had studied the sudden drop of volcanic activities.

    Alert Level 3 means there is less probability of a hazardous explosive eruption, but that the state of unrest of the volcano has not ceased.

  • PILI, Camarines Sur, March 16 - Incidences of violence continue to happen in the island province of Masbate despite the signing of a peace covenant among opposing political leaders here as two supporters of poll candidates were gunned down in the past two days, a military report said.
    Major Harold Cabunoc, chief of the 9ID Public Affairs Office, quoting the report from Special Task Force (STF) Masbate, said that Ireneo Lumahog, 51, a resident of Barangay Tubog, Pio V. Corpuz town, was shot dead by two heavily armed men around 1:30 p.m. on Monday.

  • NAGA CITY - TWO LOCAL RESIDENTS, a couple engaged in trading were divested of cash amounting to P 300,000 pesos during a lightning robbery-hold up at M. Castro St., near the Tinago National High School at 3:15 P.M. last October 7.

    Initial Investigation by the Naga City Police District Office revealed that couple, Enrique Serrano Sanchez, 44 and wife Rosemary Prado Sanchez, 44, both residents of Dons St., Barangay Dayangdang in this city, were reportedly followed by suspects riding a Black XRM Honda motorcycle, after withdrawing the huge amount of cash at the local branches of banks UCPB and Land Bank.
