MANILA, June 5 - Filipinos in the United States have so far led this year's overseas registration for the 2010 national elections with a total 15,728 registrants, its biggest chunk of 5,827 enlisting with the Los Angeles consulate-general.

The over-all total from four world regions and two Metro Manila-based centers is 93,310. Despite the U.S. lead by country, the Asia-Pacific is the over-all regional leader with 25,640 Filipinos in the region registering.

GENEVA, June 6 -- The World Health Organization (WHO) concluded an emergency expert meeting on Friday without making a decision to raise its pandemic alert level to the highest phase of 6.

At the Emergency Committee meeting, WHO Director-General Margaret Chan noted that the world remains in pandemic alert phase 5 and reaffirmed that WHO will continue to monitor the situation closely in all countries reporting cases of the A/H1N1 influenza, the WHO said in a statement.

MANILA, June 5 (PNA) - Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri on Friday lauded the Senate and the House of Representatives for passing the Home Development Mutual Fund Law of 2009, also known as the Pag-IBIG Fund Law.

Zubiri said Congress' approval of the new law on Pag-IBIG Fund will "help over 1.5 million Filipinos who are renting houses to better plan for their housing needs."

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 6 -- The Brazilian Air Force informed on Friday that bad weather conditions on the Air France Flight 445's crash site are making the search for the aircraft's parts more difficult.

According to Brigadier Ramon Borges Cardoso, head of the Airspace Control Department, no debris was located in the past hours, though the aircraft involved in the search are still making their rounds, in order to spot more objects, but the area in which they are able to fly was reduced due to the weather.

In 2008, Aranda was named "Outstanding High Value Commercial Crop Farmer" in the prestigious Gawad Saka Awards of the Department of Agriculture (DA)and last May 15, he was among the five successful businessmen in Bicol given this year's Halyao Awards during the 5th Bicol Business Week celebrations in Naga City.

MANILA, June 5, 2009-Spiritual preparations have started for the upcoming Taize "Pilgrimage of Trust", an international meeting for the youth organized by the Taize Brothers set to happen early next year in Manila

Brothers from Taize are organizing prayers and meetings in various dioceses to prepare young people for the upcoming religious event from February 3-7, 2010.

The spiritual preparation aims to bring the youth to greater awareness of the importance of the upcoming event.

MANILA, June 2, 2009─ While underscoring the sacredness of the sacrament of matrimony, a high-ranking prelate also expressed alarm on some wedding ceremonies becoming a "special event production," thus robbing the rite of its solemnity.

Manila Archbishop Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales said he has been alarmed with the growing number of entrepreneurs now known as "event organizers" and "wedding planners" involved in the smallest details of weddings who sometimes turn the solemn rite into a "show" or "presentation."

NAGA CITY -- HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS worth of public works projects being implemented in Bikol provinces are reportedly threatened by communist rebels, following the torching of heavy equipment by DPWH contractors in Presentacion, Cam. Sur. This developed as earlier, suspected rebels entered the DPWH district office in Gubat, Sorsogon and allegedly warned officials against non-payment of rebel taxes.

Suspected communist rebels torched four dump trucks, one bulldozer, and one backhoe in the third district town of Presentacion, Cam Sur, based on reports reaching the police provincial office (PPO) here on Monday (June 1).

He further said that given the favorable conditions of its environment (which is his trade secret), fishes hibernate or simply "sleeps" and then quickly awakes once brought back to water.

LEGAZPI CITY, June 4 (PNA) - Rescuers today recovered 19 passengers including the boat operator, who were reported missing when their motorized outrigger boat was swept away by big waves on Tuesday (June 2) off Catanduanes.

Elson Hermogino, Captain, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Bikol, said rescuers found the 19 passengers safe and they are now in the custody of a village official in Barangay Cabugao, Bato town in Catanduanes.

NAGA CITY --- With 14 confirmed cases of swine flu in the country, City Health Officer Dr. Vito "Butch" Borja assured the public that the city is well-prepared in the event of a swine flu outbreak.

In an interview, Dr. Borja said that a previous suspected case in the city two weeks ago resulted in the activation of a contingency plan formulated for disease outbreaks. The suspected patient, a four-year old girl who had come home with her parents from San Diego, has since been cleared by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Alabang, Metro Manila.

NAGA CITY - - THE REMAINS of a Bulgarian national was airlifted to Manila on Sunday (May 30) after reportedly dying of cardiac arrest during a contest of the reality TV series 'Survivor" being filmed at the white-sand Gota Beach in Caramoan, Camarines Sur.

It was reported here Monday that a representative from the Bulgarian government said that it will still be sending personnel to probe the cause of death of 53-year old "Survivor" contestant Moncho Vodennicharov.

NAGA CITY, June 3 (PNA) --- A regional political party known as Ako Bicol is vying in the forthcoming party-list elections in May 2010.

Ako Bicol officials were even optimistic that Bicolano voters would support and vote for the homegrown political group.

Arthur Monares, president of Ako Bicol, said the group would primarily focus on laws that improve the livelihood, education and health of Bicolanos and non-Bicolanos alike.

Monares said that Ako Bicol was counting on the votes of the more than 2.5 million registered Bicolano voters.

Camarines Sur - A source from the underground world of Jueteng blew the whistle on the numbers game's increasing popularity in this province. The insider, who chose to be known by his alias, "Rod", said that for the past three years, Jueteng has spread unchecked under the protection of several key figures in Camarines Sur.

Rod revealed that he has contacted Lingayen Archbishop Oscar Cruz and Senator Panfilo "Ping" Lacson about his defection from the underground business. He has also surrendered several bundles of jueteng receipts and collection tallies to Archbishop Cruz as evidence. Along with his exit from the jueteng business, Rod divulged information about the daily collections from the province's four congressional districts.

According to Rod, jueteng operators operated along the political structure of the province, with management teams controlling each congressional district. He added that operators are able to maintain their grip on the province because of protection money allegedly being paid weekly to police officials, government officials, and journalists.

NAGA CITY (May 28) - "12 women die everyday because of cervical cancer." This was the statement of Dr. Grace Chan, Program Manager of the Cervical Cancer Prevention (CECAP) Network Program last May 27 at the SM Mall Atrium during their campaign against cervical cancer.

The campaign was named "The Tour of Hope" which, according to the organization is an international bike tour set up by different sectors of society aimed at raising awareness for health issues in Asia. Previous bike tours were held in Thailand and Malaysia.

NAGA CITY-Eleven residents of the villages of Lupi and Cawaynan in Tinambac,Camarines Sur said they were ready to speak against the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, which they said lied when it reported in February this year that a 150-hectare reforestation project area in their village already had been fully planted with trees.

They said it was not true that the first phase of implementation of the reforestation project of DENR in their village already had been completed.

IRIGA CITY --- Fully aware of the financial difficulties of parents during enrollment period, the University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP) has launched its "P1,000 Enroll Agad Program" to make it easy for students to pursue their education this school year, aside from the numerous scholarship grants it is offering to deserving students, the top official of the university said.

NAGA CITY—The only Jesuit learning institution in Bikol region is also the first among all other schools and universities in the country to have institutional accreditation from Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU).

Ateneo de Naga University (AdNU) beat all the major Manila-based universities to the accreditation.

According to webmaster Father Paolo Padrini of Vatican Radio, the website sponsored by the Pontifical Council for the Laity is intended "to create a climate of belonging, of participating in the Church, through ever greater closeness with the Holy Father."

MANILA, May 29, 2009- A Catholic bishop sees no problem with sex education in schools but said that it should be taught "properly" and in accordance with the church teachings.

Cubao Bishop Honesto Ongtioco said that teaching sex education is not a novelty, it only has to be taught to young people at the right time and with a Catholic perspective.

"The sacredness of sex is a gift from God. For me, sex education should be taught in a proper way and [should] match the age of the child," he said over Church-run Radyo Veritas.
