PILI, Camarines Sur, Aug. 16 -- AFP Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Ricardo David Jr. over the weekend said respect for human rights, internal security operation, capability building and soldiers' welfare are among the policy thrusts the Armed Forces of the Philippines would be doing under his watch.

David said these policies that the AFP is expected to carry out is in line with President Benigno Aquino's directive to maintain peace in the country, justice for all and good governance.

Naga City (22 August) - Organizers of the Miss Bicolandia pageant are mourning the sudden and tragic death in a vehicular accident of reigning Bb. Pilipinas-International Melody Gersbach yesterday.

Gersbach was headed to Naga City from Legazpi City in order to attend the screening of this year's candidates to the Ms. Bicolandia pageant when the vehicle she was on, a Toyota Innova, was hit head-on by a Guevarra Lines minibus along Sitio Banasi, Brgy. Pawili, Bula town.

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur (21 Aug) -ARMY TROOPERS of the 42nd Infantry Battalion, while on a routine security patrol foiled a planned rebel ambush at the populated barangay of Nabarera in Baao, Camarines Sur, the 9th Division Public Affairs Office in this camp reported on Friday (August 20).

42nd Infantry Battalion commander Lt. Col. Ernesto Cruz reported that civilian residents in the locality had informed him that rebels were laying landmines along the barangay road for an ambush.

LEGAZPI CITY, Aug. 16 -- The government will be targeting at least 48 million Filipinos representing 53 percent of the total population in the massive open registration on September into the coverage of PhilHealth provided by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PHIC).

The move to be spearheaded by the Department of Health (DoH) would be in line with the desire of President Noynoy Aquino to attain universal PhilHealth coverage for all Filipinos in three years.

Naga City (20 Aug) -- The Archdiocese of Caceres will launch commemorative stamps to mark the 300 years of devotion of the Bikolanos to Our Lady of Penafrancia on September 11, 2010 at the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary, at 10 o'clock in the morning.

The Philippine Postal Corporation granted the issuance of commemorative stamps in four different designs, plus other philatelic products such as first day issue, souvenir sheets, souvenir folders and souvenir frames.

The Postmaster General Hector Villanueva and Most Rev. Leonardo Legaspi, OP, DD, shall grace the occasion.

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, Pili, Camarines Sur - A clash between Army soldiers and NPA terrorist rebels left one rebel dead two days ago, a military official said.

LtCol Anthony Purugganan, Commander of the 9th Infantry Battalion said that a platoon from his battalion encountered more or less 5 NPA rebels at Quezon village of Cataingan town at around 11:30pm on August 19 (Thursday).

"My soldiers were conducting security patrol in the village when they spotted at least 5 NPA rebels belonging to the Front Committee 83-South of the CPP-NPA-NDF. The firefight erupted when the soldiers were shot at by the rebels who started to scamper away upon seeing the approaching soldiers," Purugganan stated.

Melody Gersbach, Bb Pilipinas International 2009 title holder and three other companions were heading towards Naga City when their red Toyota Innova (with plate number NTQ 364) collided with a passenger bus along the Maharlika highway in Pawili village of Bula town at around 11:45am.

Gersbach, 24, and two other companions identified as Alden "Owen" Orense, her make-up artist, and Santos "Dodong" Ramos, the vehicle driver, were declared 'dead-on-the-spot' by responding policemen who rushed to the scene of the accident.

The comments from Cotabato Auxiliary Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo follow after the government on Friday belittled the MILF's threat for war if the peace talks do not resume soon.

On Tuesday, MILF chair Ebrahim Murad said they are prepared for any eventualities in case the planned Malaysian-brokered peace negotiation with the new Aquino administration falter.

"We went there (recently) and we saw the presence of the military and militiamen inside Luisita. Soldiers and militiamen have a main camp there," said Gariguez.

Sources at the Goa police station bared that the remains of the suspects lie at the Marymar Funeral Homes in Goa and that no next of kin had come forward to identify or claim the bodies.
