MANILA, August 13, 2010- A Catholic bishop said he was disappointed with the 11,000-strong Moro Islamic Liberation Front's threat of a renewed hostility in Southern Philippines.
The comments from Cotabato Auxiliary Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo follow after the government on Friday belittled the MILF's threat for war if the peace talks do not resume soon.
On Tuesday, MILF chair Ebrahim Murad said they are prepared for any eventualities in case the planned Malaysian-brokered peace negotiation with the new Aquino administration falter.
"This only shows that MILF always have a dagger ready hidden on their sleeves... I question their sincerity and transparency," Bagaforo said over Church-run Radyo Veritas.
"Civilian lives are in danger again. MILF warning will surely trigger reasons for the civilian to arm themselves especially in areas of possible conflict."
According to the prelate the threat by the MILF is totally "uncalled for" especially that the government is extending its arms for peace building.
President Benigno Aquino III and the MILF have earlier agreed to continue the peace talks, which collapsed in 2008, next month after the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
"The call for both parties to sit down for peace talks is really urgent," Bagaforo said. (R. Lagarde/CBCPNews)
