  • MANILA and Naga City (April 19)  -- Frontrunners Liberal Party presidential and vice presidential bets Senators Benigno Aquino III and Mar Roxas got the support of former and current local and national leaders from the Bikol region, virtually a sure win from one of the largest voting blocs in Luzon.

  • LEGAZPI CITY, April 7  - The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is set to release the new design of the Philippine monetary bills and coins by the end of 2010 and Mayon Volcano will be included in the new design of the bills.

    Marlyn Paje, acting deputy director of BSP branch here, said that this is in accordance with the New Central Bank Act or Republic Act 7653 giving the Central Bank Monetary Board, with the approval of the Philippine President, the power to prescribe denominations, dimensions, designs and inscriptions and other characteristics of notes issued by the BSP.

  • MANILA, July 18, 2009- Catholic priest-turned Pampanga Gov. Ed Panlilio has ended months of speculations by announcing today he will stand for the presidency in next year's elections.

    Panlilio said he is already prepared to take the challenge amid the snowballing calls for his presidential bid.

    He said he decided to welcome calls for running for a high position because he believes the country needs the best from Filipinos.

    Panlilio said he will offer his self to the Filipinos in whatever capacity the country will need his services.

  • MANILA, May 1, 2009- Some bishops have blasted the recent arrest of Rodolfo "Jun" Lozada as "unacceptable" and Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) executive secretary Msgr Juanito Figura called it a "big blow to justice."

    Figura who visited Lozada at the Manila Police District headquarters Friday morning said something is fundamentally wrong with the system of justice. "It appears to be selective justice, selective prosecution and selective framing of charges," he said.

  • The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) registered strong business volume and revenue growth in 2009.  Full year unaudited income rose to P8.5 billion, 33% higher than 2008 and equivalent to a 13% Return on Equity and 1.3% Return on Assets.  Correspondingly, net income for the fourth quarter of 2009 was 7% better than 2008.

  • Legazpi City (25 June) -- Albay Governor Joey Salceda declared that the toll fee hike imposed by the South Luzon Tollway Corporation (SLTC) is illegal because the franchise given to them by Philippine National Construction Corporation (PNCC) has expired and has not been renewed.

    Salceda said the concession agreement between SLTC and PNCC commenced in May 2006 while the franchise given to PNCC expired in May 2007, without being renewed by Congress.

  • MANILA, Jan. 9 -Senator Richard J. Gordon is optimistic that millions of employees of delinquent employees could now re-avail of their benefits from the Social Security System (SSS) with the enactment of the SSS condonation law.

    Republic Act No. 9903, or the Social Security Condonation Act, would also help ease the burden from non-compliant companies that were facing economic difficulties.

  • MANILA, March 31, 2010- Militant groups and other organizations today filed disqualification cases against nominees of several party-list groups with alleged ties to the Arroyo administration.

    Groups involved with election watchdog Kontra Daya campaign asked the Commission on Elections to disqualify businessman Teodorico Haresco and Eugenio Jose Lacson of the Ang Kasangga party.

  • The LGU Guarantee Corporation recently granted Philippine Veterans Bank a P1.0 Billion Automatic Guarantee Line (AGL) for Qualified Local Government Unit Debt Instruments. The AGL will be used initially by PVB in its recently arranged LGU bond and loan facilities to attract prospective co-funders.  LGUGC and PVB are working further to enhance its cooperation and partnership in order to strengthen the credit market for the LGUs. 

  • QUEZON CITY, June 24, 2009-It is the United States government that pushes hard for the Constitutional Change in the Philippines.

    This was the allegation of the independent think-tank, Ibon Foundation Inc., explaining that the US needs more market for its surplus product, that is why, it is exerting all efforts to remove nationalist and other progressive economic provisions of the 1987 Constitution, now more so with the US economy under recession.
