  • MANILA, July 11 -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has given drug companies 10 days or until July 18 to reduce their prices by half in line with the implementation of the cheaper medicines law.

    Press Secretary Cerge Remonde made this clear in a radio interview this morning as he brushed aside claims that Malacanang has something to do with the delayed implementation of the law.

    Kilos Na! seeks to support candidates who focus wholeheartedly their plans and actions to the best interest of the greater majority.

    The movement, composed of concerned people from various sectors of the Philippine society, continues to believe that democracy is at work and the government can serve the people as it should.

  • CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY --The leader of the Sumilao Farmers, who walked 1,700 kilometers from Bukidnon to Manila in 2007, was shot dead before midnight Friday. Ka Rene Penas, 51, a barangay kagawad of San Vicente, Sumilao, Bukidnon, was on a motorcycle with two other farmers on their way home when they were shot by still unknown assailants.

    Ka Rene was hit in the left chest while his companions identified as Eliezer Peñas and Samson Dollete were also injured in the shooting. Police reports said that Ka Rene tried to crawl away from the ambush but was shot again.

  • Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) reported an unaudited net income of P327.43 million for the first nine months of 2010, 11.75% higher than the P293 million as of the same period last year. Bank officials said that higher revenues from investments and interest income loans as well as trading gains were the main factors behind the increase in the first three quarters for the commercial bank owned by the World War II veterans.

  • Tacloban City (April 18) -- This Saturday morning came with a surprising but very much welcomed news that Swiss Andreas Notter, one of the two remaining International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) members being held captive by the Abu Sayyaf, was recovered by policemen in a remote area of Indanan town, Sulu province.
    The Philippine government welcomed the release of Andreas Notter of Switzerland and expressed hope that the remaining hostage would soon be freed as well.

  • MANILA--“If the bishops would tell me to run and if they endorse my candidacy, I would follow because I am a loyal soldier of the Catholic Church.”
    Thus said businessman-turned-Catholicevangelist Mike Velarde in an interview with Radio Veritas yesterday.
    He disclosed he had personal plans which he described as “a dream” of running for the presidency, though he admitted he is satisfied with his being a “servant leader” of El Shaddai, a large Catholic Charismatic group which he founded.

  • MANILA, Sept. 5- Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago on Saturday asked Malacañang to sign into law the Anti-Torture Bill once the House of Representatives ratifies the consolidated version of the landmark legislation.

    The Senate ratified Wednesday the measure seeking to end the human rights violations allegedly committed by state agents. The reconciled version of bill was approved by the bicameral conference on Monday.

  • Naga City --Nicole is a victim again, according to the official statement of Gabriela. According to the statement released by the progressive group, Nicole’s retraction through her new affidavit is a clear manifestation of the pressure the Subic rape victim is experiencing.
     

  • The kidnapings by the Abu Sayyaf (ASG) seem unstoppable.
    A 2005 US Department of State report cites a number of major kidnappings by the ASG thus:
    In April 2000, an ASG faction kidnapped 21 persons, including ten Western tourists, from a resort in Malaysia. In May 2001, the ASG kidnapped three US citizens and 17 Filipinos from a tourist resort in Palawan, Philippines. Several of the hostages, including US citizen Guillermo Sobero, were murdered. A Philippine military hostage rescue operation in June 2002 freed US hostage Gracia Burnham, but her husband Martin Burnham and Filipina Deborah Yap were killed.
