  • “What we need are efficient leaders who can turn around things, and not full autonomy,” said Sen. Francisco “Kiko” Pangilinan, reacting to a group’s proposal to create Bikol Autonomous Region through Charter change.
    Pangilinan said he knew local government executives who were able accomplish much by making use of the provisions of the Local Government Code of 1991.
    He said that although he had supported empowerment of local governments, he did not see full autonomy as an option.

  • MANILA, June 26 -- Prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will increase by P3 per kilogram tomorrow.

    Arnel Ty, president of LPG Marketers Association (LPGMA) said effective tomorrow morning they will implement a P3 per kilogram or P33 adjustment in the 11 kg LPG cylinder.

    "We will implement P3 increase per kg [increase] tomorrow morning" Ty said.

    Ty said the price hike is basically due to "increase in contract price in the international market.

  • MANILA, August 11, 2009-A Catholic bishop said it's high time for people to show their disgust over the series of scandals committed by the Arroyo administration.

    Novaliches Bishop-Emeritus Teodoro Bacani said President Arroyo and her party's reported lavish dinner in New York is another thing that requires a lot of explaining from Malacañang.

    With Malacañang claiming there was nothing wrong in dining with a posh restaurant, Bacani called on the people to make known their sentiments on the incident.

  • MANILA, April 22, 2009-One of the influential Catholic Church institutions slammed as "unjust" the arrest warrant issued against whistleblower Rodolfo "Jun" Lozada for alleged perjury crimes.
    The warrant is "undeserved" for someone who just exposed an alleged anomalous government project, the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines (AMRSP) said.
    "This order is grossly unjust considering that the charge for which Lozada is being arrested is the crime of perjury or lying under oath," the group said.

  • MANILA, June 5 - Filipinos in the United States have so far led this year's overseas registration for the 2010 national elections with a total 15,728 registrants, its biggest chunk of 5,827 enlisting with the Los Angeles consulate-general.

    The over-all total from four world regions and two Metro Manila-based centers is 93,310. Despite the U.S. lead by country, the Asia-Pacific is the over-all regional leader with 25,640 Filipinos in the region registering.

  • MANILA, May 8, 2009-The Arroyo administration's strategy to end political killings will not work, a Catholic bishop said.

    Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said the P25 million fund to reward informants who could help solve political killings will never have much impact.

    Pabillo, who heads the National Secretariat for Social Action- Justice and Peace of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), said a cash reward is not an effective way to reduce or cut crimes.
