  • MANILA, August 4, 2009- The head of Manila's Roman Catholic Church on Monday thinks that the Philippines needs another Corazon Aquino to unite the Filipino people.

    Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales said the country needs a leader that could unite the country like what the former president did in 1986 that ended Marcos' dictatorship.

    Right now, he believes the country needs a righteous leader more than someone with outstanding academic backgrounds.

  • The Optical Mark Reader (OMR) that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will use for the automated elections system (AES) in the May 2010 polls has not been fully proven as tamperand fraud-free, will encourage wholesale cheating, and will not ensure a transparent and open election system.
    Moreover, it is doubtful whether Comelec will be ready for the full automation of the elections given the time constraints based on its own calendar.

  • MANILA--Catholic Church leaders once again called on lawmakers Friday to ditch plans to amend the country’s constitution. Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal said there’s time for Charter change and it should not be done with haste.
    He said a thorough review of the measure, which according to its proponents at the House of Representatives, only seeks to revise the economic provisions of the constitution.

  • MANILA, July 25 -- The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading a bill abolishing the payment of documentary stamp tax and premium tax on all life insurance policies.

    House Bill 6017 filed by Reps. Liwayway Vinzons-Chato (Camarines Norte) and Exequiel Javier (Antique) grants the much-needed tax relief to the life insurance industry.

  • MANILA, May 8 (PNA) -- At least 20 persons died and many others were injured as typhoon "Emong" battered Northern Luzon with strong winds and heavy rains, relief and disaster response officials said today.

    Defense Secretary and National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) chairman Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said 12 fatalities were initially reported from the worst-hit Pangasinan, where he conducted an aerial survey to check on the damage caused by the howler.

    Teodoro said he also received an initial report that eight persons died in Ifugao.

  • MANILA, June 5, 2009-Spiritual preparations have started for the upcoming Taize "Pilgrimage of Trust", an international meeting for the youth organized by the Taize Brothers set to happen early next year in Manila

    Brothers from Taize are organizing prayers and meetings in various dioceses to prepare young people for the upcoming religious event from February 3-7, 2010.

    The spiritual preparation aims to bring the youth to greater awareness of the importance of the upcoming event.

  • MANILA--Catholic Church leaders have condemned the killing of an anti-mining activist and called for an investigation into its circumstances.
    Eliezer “Boy” Billanes, leader of the Anti-Development Aggression Coalition, was shot dead by unidentified men around 4:30 p.m. yesterday in Koranadal, South Cotabato.

  • MANILA, July 17, 2009-A group of Muslims is calling for a halt to speculations about the spate of bombings in Mindanao that could affect the Christian-Muslim relations.

    The Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society (CBCS) said unverified reports must be stopped especially if it could exploit religious differences for political and violent agendas.

    "In the face of these bleak incidents," the group said, more vigilance and strengthened cooperation among various faiths is more needed.

    something about child pornography,
    but the bill against it must be passed
    soonest.

    said a strict law against criminals
    who profit from child pornography
    must be put in place.

  • MANILA, July 15 -- Candidates seeking national and local positions in next year's polls are given only 11 days to file their Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) before the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

    This as the poll body released on Wednesday the calendar of activities for the May 10, 2010 national and local elections.

    In a nine-page resolution, the Comelec said the candidates can file their COCs for all elective positions, whether national or local, from Nov. 20 to Nov. 30, this year.
