  • MANILA, February 25, 2010-A Special Education (SpEd) Convention attended by teachers, parents, volunteers and organizations advocating persons with disabilities was convoked Saturday.

    It was convened by the Episcopal Commission on Health Care (ECHC) of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines on February 20, 2010 at the Paco Catholic School in Manila.

    The organizers pointed out the urgency of teaching and forming children with special needs at an early age.

  • MANILA, March 10, 2010- The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has recently wired $48,809.00 to the Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti Archbishop Bernardito Auza for the earthquake victims of Haiti.

    Msgr. Joselito C. Asis, CBCP Assistant Secretary General and Assistant Treasurer said the donations came from the Catholic faithful in response to CBCP President's appeal to the country's 86 ecclesial provinces. A second collection was held in all Sunday Masses last January 24, 2010.

  • VATICAN, Feb. 23, 2010-- Benedict XVI is expressing his concern and promising prayers after heavy rains last Saturday caused flash floods on the autonomous Portuguese island of Madeira.

    In a papal telegram to Bishop António José Cavaco Carrilho of Funchal, sent through the Pope's secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, he offered his condolences to the families of the dozens who died. The death toll was at 42 today, but search teams were still working to find 13 missing.

  • NAGA City, August 1, 2010- As the investigation gets underway, a prelate urged the public to avoid unnecessary speculation on the death of Fr. Baltazar Acompañado Jr., and wait for more information to become available.

    Following media speculation that the priest committed suicide, Caceres Archbishop Leonardo Legaspi said people should avoid it as a matter of respect for the 35-year old priest.

    Acompañado was found dead inside his room at the Pre-College Seminary in San Jose town in Camarines Sur last Wednesday with a 38-caliber revolver near his body.

    The website's content includes the activities and programs of the commission; the background of the commission; and statements and messages of the commission chairman.

  • MANILA, July 23, 2010- Butuan Bishop Juan de Dios Pueblos called on the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to stop the operations of the small town lottery (STL) in the province.

    The prelate made the appeal after the start of the STL operation in the provinces of Butuan and Cabadbaran last month without any consultations.

    Pueblos said the decision of PCSO to establish STL operations in the province is "highly questionable and immoral," because people were not properly consulted.
