  • ILOILO City, April 27, 2009-The head of the Catholic bishops' leadership is apprehensive of the ruling which increases the number of lawmakers in Congress because it might cause more problems than gains.

    Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said in a country suffering from political and economic crisis, the decision means additional burden to the public.

  • Naga City (3 March 2010) --  Pope Benedict XVI has granted the honorary title "Papal Chaplain" to four priests of the Archdiocese of Caceres which is celebrating 300 years of devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia.

    Raised to the title of "Papal Chaplain" were Fr. Jeffrey Nelson B. Tria, parish priest of San Francisco Parish, Naga City; Fr. Noe P. Badiola, parish priest of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Buhi Camarines Sur; Fr. Jose Roberto Z. Carpio, Rector of the Holy Rosary Major Seminary; and Fr. Peter Romeo M. Beriña, Rector of the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary.

  • MANILA, May 20, 2009-An official of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said that bishops are firm on their position not to favor the amendment of the Constitution.

    Changing the Charter is not necessary in order to institute reforms in the country today.

    "Ulitin ko lang po yung stand nila (na) hindi kinakailangan ang chacha upang baguhin ang ating bansa (at) ating mga tao," stated Msgr. Pedro Quitorio, Media Director of CBCP.

  • QUEZON CITY, Philippines (UCAN) -- Filipino national hero Jose Rizal died 113 years ago but the controversy over his alleged heresies still rages.

    This year, blogs and newspaper editorials continued the debate on the issue.

    In one discussion forum, one post said that, if true, it is "sad ... that the cradle of Catholicism in Asia is honoring as national hero, a Catholic heretic."

  • MANILA, Jan. 22, 2010- President Arroyo has no power to appoint the next chief justice of the Supreme Court, constitutionalist Fr. Joaquin Bernas, SJ, said Friday.

    Bernas, dean emeritus of the Ateneo Law School, said that Mrs. Arroyo will be violating the Constitution if she would insist in appointing the successor of Chief Justice Reynato Puno.

    The Charter, he said, forbids the President from making appointments within 60 days before her term ends on June 30 this year.

  • LEGASPI City, Dec. 10, 2009- The transfer of Masbate Bishop Joel Z. Baylon to the Diocese of Legazpi brought sadness to his parishioners. But the diocesan clergy suffered another blow when one of its priests died December 8 in a motorcycle accident along the National Highway at Barangay Cayabon, Milagros, Masbate.

    The fatality was identified as Fr. Norman Crisostomo De Jesus, popularly known as "Father Aga," 38 years old and pioneer parish priest of a newly-created parish in Calumpang, Balud, Masbate.

  • BACACAY, Albay, Nov. 10, 2009- At least 400 priests from the Archdiocese of Caceres and the Dioceses Legazpi, Sorsogon, Daet, Masbate, Libmanan and Virac have gathered at the Bethlehem Retreat Center, this town for their regional clergy retreat which began yesterday and will end on Friday.

    The retreat is centered on the theme "Revisiting the Priesthood in the Light of St. John Mary Vianney's Life and Example."

He also called for a "new, intense evangelization" to respond to important issues in the world today.

  • MANILA, Dec. 16, 2009─A formation program for pastoral workers under the auspices of the Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ECMI) of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has recently been adapted by neighboring Asian countries for training their migrant workers.

    The Exodus program provides pastoral workers the opportunity to learn more about migration realities and let them appreciate the work they had been doing.
