  • MANILA, May 13, 2010- The head of the Manila's Roman Catholic Church is asking the country's next president to address issues of "corruption" that worsened under the Arroyo administration.

    Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales who had lived and worked for the poor Filipinos said one hopeful solution to corruption which further aggravates poverty in the country is "good leadership."

  • MANILA, June 25, 2010-Incoming Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro said he will conduct a comprehensive review of the sex education program as soon as he assumes his post.

    Luistro of the La Sallian Brothers, a Catholic religious order, vowed to take steps to make sure the sex education modules do not contradict Christian values.

    While there are programs of the education department that needs to be continued, he said, the issue on sex education is something that needs careful assessment.

  • VATICAN CITY, June 11, 2010- The Eucharistic celebration with the greatest number of concelebrants in the church's history, 55 of whom are Filipinos, was recorded in Rome on Friday.

    Some 15, 000 cardinals, bishops and priests from around the world gathered at the St. Peter Square in a Mass presided by Pope Benedict XVI to close the Year for Priests.

    In his homily, the pontiff said Year for Priests might have been destroyed by the clerical sex abuse scandal, but instead became a "summons to purification" in the church.

  • MANILA, July 18, 2009- Catholic priest-turned Pampanga Gov. Ed Panlilio has ended months of speculations by announcing today he will stand for the presidency in next year's elections.

    Panlilio said he is already prepared to take the challenge amid the snowballing calls for his presidential bid.

    He said he decided to welcome calls for running for a high position because he believes the country needs the best from Filipinos.

    Panlilio said he will offer his self to the Filipinos in whatever capacity the country will need his services.

  • MANILA, July 1, 2010-One of the strongest defenders of civil rights among the bishops at the height of strongman Ferdinand E. Marcos' Martial Law passed away at 2:41 AM today at the Intensive Care Unit of pulmonary embolism at the Cardinal Santos Memorial Medical Center in San Juan, Metro Manila.

    Pulmonary embolism is a condition that occurs when one or more arteries in one's lungs become blocked. Medical professionals say in most cases, pulmonary embolism is caused by blood clots that travel to the lungs from another part of the body and most commonly, from one's legs.

  • MANILA, May 1, 2009- Some bishops have blasted the recent arrest of Rodolfo "Jun" Lozada as "unacceptable" and Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) executive secretary Msgr Juanito Figura called it a "big blow to justice."

    Figura who visited Lozada at the Manila Police District headquarters Friday morning said something is fundamentally wrong with the system of justice. "It appears to be selective justice, selective prosecution and selective framing of charges," he said.
