  • MANILA, Jan. 23, 2010- Pope Benedict XVI called on Filipino bishops to work for the sanctification of priests, so that they may be able to fulfill their mission in the church and in modern world.

    In a letter to the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, the pontiff said that bishops have a major role to play on how priests would exercise their pastoral functions.

    He said a bishop's role is to sanctify, and in order to do this one must first tend to his own holiness of life.

  • VATICAN CITY, December 28, 2009--Dominican Father Edward Schillebeeckx, a theologian whose work had a huge impact on the Dutch church, died at the age of 95 Dec. 23 in Nijmegen, Netherlands, where he lived since 1957.

    The Dominican taught in the department of dogmatic and historical theology at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, now known as Radboud University Nijmegen, from 1957 until his retirement in 1983. He served as theological adviser to the Dutch bishops during the Second Vatican Council and was seen as the main inspiration behind the Dutch catechism for adults.

  • MANILA, June 2, 2009─ While underscoring the sacredness of the sacrament of matrimony, a high-ranking prelate also expressed alarm on some wedding ceremonies becoming a "special event production," thus robbing the rite of its solemnity.

    Manila Archbishop Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales said he has been alarmed with the growing number of entrepreneurs now known as "event organizers" and "wedding planners" involved in the smallest details of weddings who sometimes turn the solemn rite into a "show" or "presentation."

  • MADRID, Spain, May 4, 2010--The organizers for World Youth Day 2011 have released the list of the patron saints for the event, which "encompasses the history of the Church in Spain, from the first saints of Madrid."

    According to a press release, "The Holy See has confirmed the proposal of the patron saints for World Youth Day (WYD): St. Isidore, St. John of the Cross, St. Maria de la Cabeza, St. John of Avila, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Rose of Lima, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Rafael Arnaiz and St. Francis Xavier."

  • MANILA, Dec. 3, 2009- The 79-year old Irish missionary who was recently held by unidentified armed men in southern Philippines for 31 days left at 1:05 AM today on board Etihad Flight EY 421 for a five-week vacation in Ireland by way of Abu Dhabi.

    Interviewed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport past midnight today, Fr. Sinnott said "I feel find going back home and looking forward to the weather, it's windy, wet and cold."

  • MANILA, Jan. 28, 2010-The more than 5,000 priests and bishops' participants to the ongoing national congress of the clergy currently being held at World Trade Center, Pasay City, have donated one million pesos to the devastated Caribbean nation of Haiti.

    A special collection that yielded 988,675.35 pesos was made during the morning mass on the third day of the congress.

    The collection filled three cartons of bills and coins in various denominations and currencies (Euro, US, Australian, Hong Kong dollars, Yuan).

  • VATICAN, Jan. 26, 2010-- Pope John Paul II always took penitence seriously, spending entire nights lying with his arms outstretched on the bare floor, fasting before ordaining priests or bishops and flagellating himself, said the promoter of his sainthood cause.

    Msgr. Slawomir Oder, postulator of the late pope's cause, said Pope John Paul used self-mortification "both to affirm the primacy of God and as an instrument for perfecting himself."

  • ZAMBOANGA CITY, Jan. 27 - The Irish priest who was kidnapped last year in Pagadian City has returned and resumed his missionary works, an official disclosed.

    Allan June Molde, Zamboanga del Sur provincial government spokesman, disclosed that Fr. Michael Sinnott of the Missionary Society of Saint Columban (MSSC) arrived last Friday in Pagadian City, the capital of Zamboanga del Sur.

    Sinnott arrived in Manila last January 15 following a vacation in Ireland after his release by the kidnappers in November last year.

  • MANILA, Jan. 7, 2010- Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales called on politicians to spare the Black Nazarene feast on Saturday from early election campaigning.

    Msgr. Jose Clemente Ignacio, Quiapo parish priest, said the cardinal is reminding the politicians to respect the solemn observance of the feast.

    "We are sensitive about this and our beloved cardinal is also appealing that the Black Nazarene feast will not be used for politicking," Ignacio said.

  • NAGA CITY (19 March ) -- Comelec citizens' arm, the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) in the province, together with church groups and non-government organizations, is set to sponsor a series of candidates' fora on April 10, 12, 14, and 16 at Naga City's Plaza Quezon beginning 6:00 PM.
    Fr. Louie Occiano of the Caceres Commission on Communications or CCCom released recently information and guidelines on the said political fora.
