  • MANILA, July 22, 2010- An official of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) called on President Benigno Aquino III to publicly state his position on a measure that seeks to promote birth control.

    Fr. Melvin Castro, executive secretary of the CBCP's Commission on Family and Life, said Aquino should clarify his stance on the Reproductive Health bill when he delivers his first State of the Nation Address on July 26.

    As the country's new chief executive, he said it would be best if Mr. Aquino lays out his plan regarding family planning.

  • MANILA, July 21, 2010- Election watchdog Kontra Daya denounced the Commission on Elections en banc ruling allowing Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo, son of former President Arroyo, to sit in Congress as representative of Ang Galing Pinoy Partylist (AGP).

    Shortly before the elections, militant organizations led by then senatorial bets Satur Ocampo and Liza Maza had filed disqualification cases against Arroyo, claiming he does not represent the security guards, tricycle drivers, and small businessmen AG claims to represent.

  • MANILA, February 10, 2010-With the onset of the official campaign season, Catholic Filipino youths are one in saying that they want a God-fearing President to be elected come May 10.

    In a podcast interview during the January 16 launching of YouthPinoy at UST, a number of Catholic youth leaders expressed their views on what qualities the next President should have in order to govern morally and effectively.

  • MANILA, Feb. 18, 2010-Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Fr. Jose Araneta-Cabantan as the new Bishop of Malaybalay in Bukidnon province.

    The bishop-elect succeeds Bishop Honesto Pacana, whose resignation was accepted by the pontiff, upon having reached the age limit of 75.

    The priest's appointment was released in the Vatican at high noon Thursday, Rome time. It was announced simultaneously in Manila, at 6 p.m. by the Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams, apostolic nuncio to the Philippines.

  • MANILA, July 9, 2010- With the anti-child pornography law taking effect next week, the Catholic hierarchy is hoping for strengthened fight against the "alarming" problem.

    Msgr. Pedro Quitorio, media office director of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines, said the church has been building momentum with its anti-child porn campaign.

    The agency in 2007 tied-up with the Optical Media Board (OMB) to help the government stamp out child pornography through the instrumentality of an "ad hoc committee" headed by Ambassador Henrietta de Villa.

  • MANILA, Feb. 9, 2010-A poll watchdog vowed to keep an eye on the conduct of the country's first ever automated in May to prevent massive fraud.

    With the elections barely three months away, the National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) said the capabilities of the new system have not been fully established.

    "People are understandably nervous that many things could go wrong or that it would simply facilitate wholesale cheating," Namfrel said in a statement released Tuesday.

  • MANILA, June 3, 2010-The International Labor Organization (ILO) awarded some P4 million in what has been described as "innovation grant" to Pioneer Life, Inc. in support of its project Pamilyang OFW Savers and Wellness Club. Pioneer Life Inc. was one of 18 grantees from more than 200 applicants.

  • MANILA, July 7, 2010-Government officials and members of the judiciary have been urged to strive for professionalism and integrity of their services.

    Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales made the call when officiating at the "Red Mass" attended by President Benigno Aquino III and ranking leaders of the judiciary at the Manila Cathedral Tuesday.

    Rosales said judges, magistrates, and all public officials are supposed to uphold laws that are just and ensure that justice prevail in the society.

  • VATICAN, March 12, 2010-- When a priest sees himself as nothing more than a "social agent," he runs the risk of betraying the priesthood itself, says Benedict XVI.

    The Pope said this today upon receiving in audience the participants in the International Theological Conference "Fidelity of Christ, Fidelity of the Priest," organized by the Congregation for Clergy.

    The two-day event ended today, which was attended by more than 50 bishops and over 500 priests and was organized around the theme of the Year for Priests.
