Death Toll of Indonesia's Quake Rises to 70

JAKARTA, Sept. 6 -- The 7.3-magnitude powerful earthquake jolting Indonesia's West Java on Wednesday had killed 70 people, wounded 966 and caused 32 still missing, the national Antara news agency reported on Saturday.

Rano Harjaya, an official from the coordinating unit of the West Java Disaster Mitigation Service, said that most of the dead, wounded and missing victims were found in Cianjur of West Java.

By now, rescue workers had found 25 dead bodies in Cianjur, including the newest one found buried by rocks about 30 meters deep. The body was found with the help of heavy-duty equipment and was directly handed over to his family.

Rescue workers continued searching for 32 other missing victims believed to be buried by the quake-triggered avalanches.

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale shook West Java on Wednesday at 2:55 p.m. West Indonesia Time (WIB), causing people as far as Jakarta to panic. The quake's epicenter was located at 8.24 degrees southern latitude, and 107.32 degrees eastern longitude. (PNA/Xinhua)
