Election day is special non-working holiday

MANILA, Philippine - President Benigno Aquino III declared on Wednesday that May 13, 2013 is officially a special public non-working holiday, giving way to the upcoming local and national midterm elections.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement that Proclamation No. 571, signed on Tuesday, is to "enable the Filipino people to exercise their right to suffrage."

"We enjoin all eligible to use this non-working holiday to participate in the electoral process that forms the bedrock of our democracy," Lacierda said.

Rebels raid a Chinese mining firm in Camarines Norte

NAGA CITY – A Chinese mining company operating in Camarines Norte has declared losses amounting to 4 million pesos after communist rebels burned heavy equipment and forcibly took the firearms of its security guards.

According to reports made available during the weekend, the rebels attacked a mining site in barangay Napaod, Labo, Camarines Norte and burned two dump trucks and two pay loaders owned by BUHAY-TAP Mining International, a company registered in the People’s Republic of China.

We welcome the Supreme Court status quo ante order, which lifted the airtime limits of political ads imposed by COMELEC Resolution No. 9615 or the Rules and Regulations Implementing Republic Act No. 9006.

We maintain that the cheapest and most effective way of informing the public about the qualifications of the candidates, and issues involving them during elections, is through the medium of radio and television.

British former PM Thatcher dies after stroke

LONDON (Xinhua) - British former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died at the age of 87 after suffering a stroke, her spokesman announced Monday.

The spokesman Lord Bell said: "It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning."

Baroness Thatcher was Conservative prime minister from 1979 to 1990. She was the first woman to hold the post, renowned for the nickname of "Iron Lady" worldwide.
