DOLE Bicol to Employ Bulusan-affected Residents

Sorsogon City (10 December) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Bicol will employ this December some 100 jobless residents displaced by the Bulusan eruption from three affected municipalities in the province as part of the 'emergency employment program' of the agency.

DOLE Bicol Regional Director Atty. Alvin M. Villamor said that the emergency employment is one measure to augment the loss of income of 100 residents from Casiguran, Juban and Irosin towns in Sorsogon.

Bulusan Residents Warned of Upslope Lahar

PHIVOLCS resident volcanologist for Bicol, Eduardo P. Laguerta warned that an estimated 100,000 cubic-meters of ashfall deposits on Mt. Bulusan’s upslope threatens to inundate the four river channels at the base of the volcano once these are triggered by heavy rains.

LEGAZPI CITY (3 December 2010) — Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) regional director Rafael Alejandro IV disclosed on Thursday that during the OCD updating conference on Mt. NPA Declares Unilateral Ceasefire Around Mt. Bulusan

SORSOGON CITY, Nov. 24 -– The local unit of the communist rebel movement in Sorsogon has declared a unilateral suspension of offensive military operations (SOMO) in areas near the restive Bulusan Volcano.

The SOMO declaration that took effect last November 22 covers the 10-kilometer radius from the crater of the volcano whose current restlessness has been placed by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) under alert level one.

Army Rescue Teams Conduct Clean Up Drive in Sorsogon

JUBAN,Sorsogon Nov 26, 2010- As Bulusan volcano calms down after spewing ash two days ago, the Army’s rescue personnel visited the public schools in this province to remove the thickening ashes inside the school facilities, a military official said today.

Bulusan's New Eruption Triggers Evacuation

JUBAN,SorsogonNov 22 2010–The latest eruption of Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon triggers evacuation of families in nearby villages at the foot of the grumbling volcano, a military official said.

LtCol Santiago Enginco, Commanding Officer of the 49th Infantry Battalion based in Juban town said that he immediately deployed 6 military vehicles to assist the evacuation at around 8:00am yesterday, November 21 .

Lahar From Bulusan Flows Into Sorsogon Rivers

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 17 -- Intermittent rains caused lahar from the slopes of Bulusan Volcano to flow into a river along Barangay Patag and another in Gulang-Gulang, both in Irosin town, and the Rangas river in Juban town.

The rivers, which turned grayish due to volcanic sand, ash and similar tiny debris, had lahar which was a combination of rainwater with less than 60 percent sediment, said Phivolcs Resident Volcanologist Ed Laguerta in an interview at the Bulusan Observatory in Sorsogon City.

Quakes Jolt Bulusan, More Explosions Expected - Phivolcs

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 19 - At least 41 volcanic earthquakes jolted Mount Bulusan on Friday, the highest number so far detected by seismic instruments for the past five days, signifying that pressure is still building up and this may probably lead to more ash and steam laden explosions, volcanologists said.

Mount Bulusan Erupts for the 5th Time --Phivolcs

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 12 -- Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon province belched on Friday morning a voluminous ash plume 700 meters above its crater rim that drifted and covered villages in the southwest flank of the volcano, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the phreatic explosion occurred at 6:59 a.m., sending light gray ash column that was accompanied by rumbling sounds, a typical characteristic of Bulusan's restive state.

Ash falls were reported in the villages in the towns of Irosin and Juban.

JUBAN, Sorsogon Nov 10, 2010- Bulusan's latest eruption and ash fall triggers evacuation by refugees living at the foot of the volcano, a military official said here today.

1^st Lieutenant Oliver Dela Cruz, Commanding Officer of the Charlie Company of the 49^th Infantry Battalion said that more evacuees from the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone in Sitio Gimaloto (sub-village) in Ingladian village of Casiguran town, trooped to the evacuation center in Escuala village starting at around 5pm yesterday.

Mount Bulusan's Eruption

Mt Bulusan spews ash and black smoke, triggering the evacuation of at least 100 people living near its slopes in Sitio Gimaloto, Ingladian village in Casiguran town, Sorsogon at around 3:45pm yesterday. No one was reported injured during the latest explosion. Soldiers of the 49th Infantry Battalion are placed on high alert to assist in the evacuation of the residents in the 4-kilometer danger zone.

Authorities Raise Alert Level as Mt. Bulusan Spews Ash

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 6, 2010 - Sorsogon province's Mt. Bulusan spewed a grayish ash column 600 meters high Saturday, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to raise Alert Level 1.

Phivolcs reported observing explosions as thick ash clouds hovered over the volcano's summit.

Seismic instruments recorded a 57-second ash explosion at about 8:11 a.m. Saturday, Phivolcs noted.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said its seismic instruments already recorded four volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours.

Salceda Hits SC Ruling on SLEX Fee Hike

LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines - Oct. 22 - Albay Governor Joey Salceda on Friday expressed dismay over the Supreme Court (SC) ruling allowing the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) to hike their toll way fees.

"I feel so helpless - saan na tatakbo ang ordinaryong probinsiyano for protection?" he remarked.

According to the governor, the ruling has long-term adverse economic impacts on the welfare of the province's small viajeros who depend on Divisoria trade, or the fish dealers that rely on Navotas, and the ordinary motorists that include students studying in Metro Manila or families visiting their relatives.

Salceda said the Supreme Court has allowed three toll roads to impose an increase in their rates.
