Rebels' Plan to Slay Army Top Brass Bared

CAMP ELIAS ANGELES, PILI, CAMARINES SUR-AN ARMY Spokesman of the 9th Infantry Division based in this camp had revealed that recent documents captured from rebels during an encounter indicated that the CPP-NPA-NDF had directed the elimination of some high-ranking army personnel during encounters and ambuscades.

9th Inf. Division, PA spokesman Major Harold Cabunoc disclosed that the information was uncovered in documents recovered by army troopers during an encounter with 10 NPA rebels in the remote barangay of Marangi in San Fernando, Camarines Sur last April 28.

Cabunoc said Army Col. Leoncio Sirunai was lucky he was not among the army unit that was ambushed by the rebels in the rural area of San Fernando.

It was reported that Sirunai's job was to frequent army detachments with CAFGUs to facilitate the payment of salaries for both regular enlisted men and CAFGUs during salary days.

Meanwhile, the Camarines Sur Police Director, Sr. Supt. Jonathan Viernes Ablang, had declared that four municipalities of Camarines Sur province are in the Election Watch list of the PNP, particularly the towns of Tinambac, Ragay, Libmanan and the coastal town of Garchitorena.

According to Ablang, the localities have reported cases of communist rebels' previous intervention during election period, as well as recent high occurrence of activities of by the said armed group. (SONNY SALES)
