MANILA, Feb. 5, 2010-Guarding against the passage a bill that seeks to promote artificial family planning has become a matter of vigilance for the Catholic hierarchy.
Even if Congress adjourned without tackling the controversial Reproductive Health bill, a church leader said staying put is something they are "constantly trying to maintain."
Fr. Melvin Castro, executive secretary of the CBCP's Commission on Family and Life, said the RH bill's passage will surely be pushed again in the next Congress.
"We are joyful that in this particular round, the people have won. However, we are certain that RH bill will be reintroduced," he said.
House Speaker Prospero Nograles said the RH bill was no longer tackled before Congress adjourns today for the election period.
He stressed that there was simply not enough time to address the bill, which has raised protracted debates about its moral implications.
Church leaders are strongly against the measure's passage, with some giving serious threats that they would campaign against lawmakers supporting the bill.
Castro then called on the public to vote for candidates who are against the bill and who are pro-family in the coming polls.
"We reaffirm our call to the Filipino electorate to reject anti-family and anti-life candidates and put into office those who are genuinely pro-family," he said. (Roy Lagarde)
