Mining Firm in Hot Water Yet Again in Lagonoy

Lagonoy, Camarines Sur April 25, 2011 - Lagonoy Mayor Delfin Pilapil, Jr. vows to investigate the alleged continued mining operation at Barangay Himagtocon by the Benguet-based Prime Rock Mining Corporation despite the cease and desist order issued to the mining firm by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

In February this year, MGB Regional Director Reynulfo Juan declared Prime Rock mining operations in Lagonoy illegal because it had no permit from MGB, even as it had secured a  small-scale mining permit from the provincial government.

Last year, Prime Rock caught the attention of authorities when it was reported to be carrying out blasting operations, which are prohibited under its small-scale mining permit.

Early this year, doubts were raised about Prime Rock's capability to ensure the safety of its workers when an employee, Chen Te Hao, a Chinese national, died when a rock smashed his head during a clearing operation.
