  • MANILA, July 17, 2009-A group of Muslims is calling for a halt to speculations about the spate of bombings in Mindanao that could affect the Christian-Muslim relations.

    The Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society (CBCS) said unverified reports must be stopped especially if it could exploit religious differences for political and violent agendas.

    "In the face of these bleak incidents," the group said, more vigilance and strengthened cooperation among various faiths is more needed.

  • MANILA, July 15, 2009-A Mindanao-based prelate said the government should not just rush amnesty in favor of the Abu Sayyaf members responsible for the kidnapping and release of ICRC volunteers "because of the track record of kidnapping" over the past few years.

    In a radio interview, Prelature of Marawi Bishop Edwin Angot Dela Pena, MSP, said previous Abu Sayyaf victims are asking for justice.

    "I think we have to satisfy the demands of justice as there are minimum requirements of love and justice although we can talk about amnesty later," the prelate said.

  • MANILA, July 10, 2009─Cotabato Archbishop Orlando B. Quevedo, OMI deplored the recent bombing in Cotabato City that left several people dead and wounded others, saying that the dastardly act "is a heinous crime that cries out to heaven."

    "In strongest terms, I condemn this inhuman and unconscionable act of murder so senseless and so indiscriminate," said the prelate.

  • MANILA, July 7, 2009-Roman Catholic bishops will choose one among them on July 11 who will serve the top post of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

    The 98 active bishop "electors" will gather on Saturday to Sunday for the CBCP's 99th plenary assembly at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center in Paco, Manila.

    Highlight of the meeting is the election of a new president who would fill the shoes of outgoing CBCP head, Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo.

  • MANILA, July 11 -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has given drug companies 10 days or until July 18 to reduce their prices by half in line with the implementation of the cheaper medicines law.

    Press Secretary Cerge Remonde made this clear in a radio interview this morning as he brushed aside claims that Malacanang has something to do with the delayed implementation of the law.

  • MANILA, June 26 -- Prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will increase by P3 per kilogram tomorrow.

    Arnel Ty, president of LPG Marketers Association (LPGMA) said effective tomorrow morning they will implement a P3 per kilogram or P33 adjustment in the 11 kg LPG cylinder.

    "We will implement P3 increase per kg [increase] tomorrow morning" Ty said.

    Ty said the price hike is basically due to "increase in contract price in the international market.

    This was the allegation of the independent think-tank, Ibon Foundation Inc., explaining that the US needs more market for its surplus product, that is why, it is exerting all efforts to remove nationalist and other progressive economic provisions of the 1987 Constitution, now more so with the US economy under recession.

  • MANILA, June 19 - The salary increase of government workers nationwide takes effect July 1, 2009, Malacañang said today.

    Executive Secretary Eduardo R. Ermita said that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed Executive Order (EO) No. 811 on June 18 to effect the hike in the salaries of government workers.

    The directive provides for the appropriation of P18.4 billion from the 2009 General Appropriations Act and savings of different departments, bureaus, offices and agencies of the national government.

  • MANILA, June 19 (PNA) -- The Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC) on Friday said claims of a total of 523 accounts amounting to P87.5 million in Legacy banks have been denied.

    PDIC president Jose Nograles said the said accounts were denied because these are either not in the master list of deposit accounts, or deposits converted from pre-need plans or came from fictitious loans and the bank's marketing promotions.
