  • MANILA, August 4, 2009- The head of Manila's Roman Catholic Church on Monday thinks that the Philippines needs another Corazon Aquino to unite the Filipino people.

    Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales said the country needs a leader that could unite the country like what the former president did in 1986 that ended Marcos' dictatorship.

    Right now, he believes the country needs a righteous leader more than someone with outstanding academic backgrounds.

  • MANILA, July 28 -- President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo has signed the Executive Order imposing the Maximum Drug Retail Price (MDRP) on five drugs not compliant with the recommendation of the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

    The President signed yesterday (July 27) Executive Order No. 821, "Prescribing the Maximum Drug Retail Prices for Selected Drugs and Medicines that Address Diseases that Account for the Leading Causes of Morbidity and Mortality."

  • MANILA, Aug. 1  -- Former Philippine president Corazon Aquino died early Saturday morning at age 76 after battling colon cancer for over a year, her family said.

    Corazon Aquino's son, Senator Benigno Aquino III, confirmed that the former Philippine leader died of cardio respiratory arrest at 3:18 a.m. local time Saturday (1918 GMT Friday) at the Makati Medical Center in the country's capital Manila.

    Aquino was diagnosed with the disease in March 2008 and has been confined at the hospital for more than a month.

  • MANILA, July 22, 2009-Followers of the Presidential candidate Governor Ed Panlilio has affirmed support through formal launching of the Kilos Na! Movement last July 18, 2009 at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani Auditorium in Quezon City.

    Kilos Na! seeks to support candidates who focus wholeheartedly their plans and actions to the best interest of the greater majority.

    The movement, composed of concerned people from various sectors of the Philippine society, continues to believe that democracy is at work and the government can serve the people as it should.

  • MANILA, July 25 -- The House of Representatives has approved on third and final reading a bill abolishing the payment of documentary stamp tax and premium tax on all life insurance policies.

    House Bill 6017 filed by Reps. Liwayway Vinzons-Chato (Camarines Norte) and Exequiel Javier (Antique) grants the much-needed tax relief to the life insurance industry.

  • MANILA, July 24 -- In his quest to clinch the presidential nomination of the ruling coalition, Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro on Friday formally took his oath as a member of the merged Lakas-Kampi-CMD (Christian Muslim Democrat) party.

    Party president and Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita administered the oath on Teodoro at the party headquarters along Ortigas-Edsa, in San Juan City.

    Teodoro's wife, Tarlac Rep. Monica Prieto-Teodoro, also took her oath as a member of the newly-merged ruling party.

  • MANILA, July 18, 2009- Catholic priest-turned Pampanga Gov. Ed Panlilio has ended months of speculations by announcing today he will stand for the presidency in next year's elections.

    Panlilio said he is already prepared to take the challenge amid the snowballing calls for his presidential bid.

    He said he decided to welcome calls for running for a high position because he believes the country needs the best from Filipinos.

    Panlilio said he will offer his self to the Filipinos in whatever capacity the country will need his services.

  • MANILA, July 15 -- Candidates seeking national and local positions in next year's polls are given only 11 days to file their Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) before the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

    This as the poll body released on Wednesday the calendar of activities for the May 10, 2010 national and local elections.

    In a nine-page resolution, the Comelec said the candidates can file their COCs for all elective positions, whether national or local, from Nov. 20 to Nov. 30, this year.

  • MANILA, July 15 -- Freed International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) worker Eugenio Vagni left for Italy Wednesday morning following his release over the weekend from Abu Sayyaf bandits.

    Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) said Vagni took the KLM flight 804 at 10:45 am at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) bound for a stopover in Amsterdam and then fly to Italy.

    The Filipino community in Florence, Italy has prepared a Thanksgiving Mass for Vagni.

  • MANILA, July 14, 2009-A group of former seminarians would help raise funds for the campaign of Pampanga Gov. Ed Panlilio should he run for the presidency in 2010.

    The Philippine Alliance of eX-Seminarians (PAX) said they would support the priest-turned politician because he stands for a different kind of politics.

    According to one of its convenors, Atty. Ricardo Ribo, the governor is exactly the kind of leader that the country needs.

    "At the moment only Among Ed personify our advocacy. We are most willing and we should all be willing to do that," Ribo said.
