DARAGA, Albay, April 14 -- Three people died and another injured on Tuesday in the worst vehicular accident that occurred here, a ranking police official said Wednesday.

Police identified the fatalities as Fernando Lisay, 32, Christopher Attractivo, 17 both of barangay Balinad, this town, and Junely Espinas, 19 of barangay Penafrancia while the injured was Jay-R Lasi, 16, of Kimantong, all in Daraga town.

Senior Supt. William Macavinta, Albay police director, said the accident took place at around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in barangay Sipi here when two trucks and two cars and a trimobile collided while negotiating a down stretch road at the Maharlika Highway here.

Macavinta said two of the three fatalities were pronounced dead on arrival at the Bicol Regional Teaching and Training Hospital (BRTTH) in Legazpi City while the other died while under medical treatment.

He said the vehicular accident that claimed three lives was the worst road tragedy to happen this year in the province.

Probers initial report said the road accident took place when a truck from Sorsogon overtook and crashed with another truck causing a "domino" collisions involving two trucks, two cars and a tricycle.

One of the truck driver involved in the mishap told investigators that his truck had a mechanical trouble and went wayward.

Probers said the tricycle carrying all the victims was crashed when pinned by a truck involved in the collision.

Rescuers from the Albay Health and Emergency Management (AHEM) paramedics, the police, firemen and Army soldiers yesterday found difficulty retrieving the victims that were pinned inside the tricycle.

The accident led to a two-hour heavy traffic at the Maharlika Highway, stranding hundred of vehicles bound for Sorsogon and Legazpi City.

Investigation is still ongoing. (PNA)
