UNEP Masscom Students Attend International Media Convention

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Living up to its mark as "Home of Global Achievers", the University of Northeastern Philippines always sees to it that the quality of trainings given to their students is at par with international standards.  Anchored also on this vision is the desire to give its students the latest advancement and exposure in the field of journalism.

Towing this line, UNEP sent six  of its Communication Arts Students, along with the university's Media Relations Director, Ms. Melody Ordonez, to participate in the 2nd International Convention on Media Communication at the University of the Philippines (UP) on Dec. 3.

The ever energetic UNEP Vice President for Finance, Miss Del Alfelor-Tibi was also with the team, all keyed-up while anticipating for the productive discussion and inputs coming from the convention's distinguished lecturers and veteran journalists from Al Jazeera, CNN, Reuters, and from the country's two leading networks, ABS-CBN and GMA 7.

Aside from mass communication students coming from prestigious schools in Metro Manila, hundreds of media professionals and educators also attended the gathering sponsored by International Center for Communication Studies (ICCS) based at the UP Film Institute in Diliman, Quezon City.

"This is actually the second time that UNEP participated in an international event, like this one.  This is one of our university's way of exposing them to academic and non-academic trainings.  Basically, this is a preparation for them, to become world class media practitioners in the future," Ms. Ordonez said in an interview.

Among the speakers and their topics during the international convention were: ABS-CBN's Korina Sanchez (Climbing the Journalism Ladder); Reuters bureau chief Raju Gopalakrishnan( Lecture on International Journalism Practice); Susan Enriquez of GMA (Lecture on General Beat Reporting).

A lecture on War Reporting was discussed by Al Jazeera English bureau chief Marga Ortigas while multi-awarded broadcast journalist and Probe Team host Che-Che Lazaro tackled Media Ethics.  GMA Imbestigador and Saksi host Mike Enriquez also centered his talk on Journalism as a public service.

Tibi, who herself is a UP Journalism graduate, said that the UNEP management, particularly under the stewardship of its University President, Atty. Remelisa Alfelor-Moraleda really puts high regard to trainings that will  enhance their students' talents and capabilities.

"The university makes it a policy to send its students to international events to sustain the delivery of high quality-education with the ultimate goal of maintaining its reputation as the home of global achievers in the Bicol region."
