‘FRONT ROW’ wins grand prize at the 2014 UNICEF Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award for Television

One of GMA Network’s award-winning documentary programs, Front Row is this year’s Winner of the prestigious UNICEF Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award for Television.

Its winning documentary, “Ulilang Lubos” (Orphaned) follows the daily life of 10-year-old Princess, who has had to take care of three younger siblings since their mother abandoned them. Princess washes produce at a wet market to earn money. She receives five to 20 pesos for this.

Former UST head dies at 90

QUEZON City, Oct. 28, 2014—A former rector of the University of Santo Tomás (UST) in Manila died on Monday, Oct. 27, from a yet undisclosed cause, the official Facebook page of the university reports.

He was 90 years old.

Fr. Frederik S. Fermin, OP a Dutch-born naturalized Filipino citizen, served the Pontifical and Royal University as Rector Magnificus from 1978 until 1981.

He was also Dean of the Catholic university’s Faculty of Arts and Letters, and rector of the UST Central Seminary.

MANILA, Oct. 26, 2014— A Catholic bishop has warned the public against “polluting the minds” of the youth by sharing pornographic images and videos over social media. “We also appeal to people who pass on these kinds of materials to stop from doing so. These pollute the minds of people especially our young people that lead to the trivializing of their sexuality which come from God,” Bishop Gilbert Garcera of Daet in Camarines Norte said.

Pope beatifies Paul VI, ‘great helmsman’ of Vatican II

VATICAN CITY, Oct 19, 2014– Addressing those gathered in Saint Peter’s Square on Sunday for the beatification of Paul VI, Pope Francis reminded Christians who live out the Gospel message that they are “God’s newness” both “in the Church and in the world.” In his Oct. 19 homily, the Pope said God is “continually surprising us, opening our hearts and guiding us in unexpected ways.” In so doing, “he renews us: he constantly makes us ‘new’.

“A Christian who lives the Gospel is ‘God’s newness’ in the Church and in the world. How much God loves this ‘newness’!”
