Camarines Norte tree planting launched

Daet, Camarines Norte. The DENR – Camarines Norte launched the “20 Million Seedling Production Program- Tree for Life Project” Urban Parks/ Areas Mass Planting at Brgy. Bibirao, Daet last November 14. The DENR – Camarines Norte was the host province for the Regional Launching of the Urban Areas Mass Tree Planting. Participants from different NGOs, private and government agencies, academe and LGUs within the province composed of 1,257 planters simultaneously planted some 7,423 seedlings of Narra and caballero in their respective urban parks/ areas.

Robredo allies suffer defeat

Naga City – Several Punong Barangay candidates and kagawads supported by Mayor Jesse Robredo were defeated during the recently concluded October 29 elections. Four of Robredo’s supported candidates as Punong barangay lost to their opponents while some of his incumbents who ran as kagawads were defeated by a large margin of votes.

Ending the dry spell

We are in such ironic times these days: we are all praying for the rains so as to avoid an impending disaster brought about by the continuous dry spell that would definitely ruin the rice fields and all the other crops as well as create havoc to our water supply and electricity. And yet, just some 6, 7, 8 months ago, we prayed that the rains would stop hammering our region as we were then totally devastated by typhoons Milenyo and Reming to which we attributed so much destruction to human lives and properties that we are still recovering and recouping from even at this time.

Over the years, our Christian-influenced holidays got added up—rightly so—with Muslim holy days. The more, the merrier, of course. Except for our corporate and business employers who dread the thought of added holiday pay for employees and humble workers like us.

After its 96th plenary meeting, the influential Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has issued a statement on the current predicament of the nation. Stressing that the common good be pursued above personal interests, the bishops' statement underscored that the challenge for each and everyone is to undertake personal conversion that would eventually lead to genuine social transformation.

The Philippine political landscape was recently dominated by the May 14 election, effectively obscuring other pressing political issues such as the charter change, extra-judicial killings, and legitimacy issues against the Arroyo administration. This presentation will be an attempt to do analysis of the events and emergent trends in the said exercise, as well as of the scenarios and prospects after the just-concluded election.

Last week, this paper published an article of entitled "The Youth and the Penafrancia Fiesta." It instantly caught my curiosity. Aside from the fact that the opinion page rarely features the views of another generation, the recent well-meaning exchanges in print and radio regarding the Penafrancia Fiesta are more than enough to make me want to know a new take on the topic.
