Naga City (13 May) -- Still working wonders, the "Ubos kung Ubos, Gabos kung Gabos" election battle cry of Naga City pertaining to a landslide win of the administration's candidates, now dubbed as "Team Naga" made waves again and is now a phenomenal part of this city's political history. This after the entire Team Naga, headed by its winning tandem, Naga's mayoralty bet Atty. John Bongat and Vice Mayor Gabriel Hidalgo Bordado, along with the full line up of their city councilors were officially declared as winners by Atty. Cinderella Lozano, Naga City Comelec Supervisor in a simple proclamation rite at City Hall last May 11.

CBCP hopes for clean polls amid automation glitches

MANILA, May 5, 2010-The Catholic hierarchy still clings to the hope that next week's automated elections would be fine amid new automation glitches again and fears of poll failure. The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) also called on the faithful to downplay rumors of negative situations on May 10 polls especially those that "feed on our fears."

UNEP celebrates Santacruzan 2010

The University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP) conducted its own version of Santacruzan inside the campus with its faculty members, personnel and students as its stunning reyna elenas and konsortes. Now on its 4th year, the Santacruzan festival became an annual event for UNEPians in celebration of the Month of the Holy Cross. The event also coincides with the feast of UNEP's patroness, Our Lady of Remedies.

Namfrel to count votes; PPCRV to conduct parallel tally

MANILA, May 6, 2010-The National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) said it would conduct an independent count of the votes for the May 10 automated polls. Namfrel failed to get accreditation as citizens' arm of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) after the poll body ruled that its officials were partisan. The task which Namfrel had been doing in the past elections was given to the Catholic Church-backed Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV).

Inadequate budget starving the country's health system

MANILA - Although the government claims to do its best in improving health services for the people, the dire working conditions of nurses and doctors and the diminishing health budget speak of a moribund healthcare system. As if this is not enough, the Arroyo administration is even tolerating the harassment of community health workers who only wanted to serve the underprivileged in far flung areas.
