Bagumbayan (Bagong Bayan): The heroes’ aspiration

The Filipino’s love of country has a very long history. Long before the internet or Facebook, we have had Filipinos making the extreme sacrifice of life so that we may live a little better. From Lapu-lapu to Bonifacio, from Del Pilar to Luna, we have seen different ways of struggle and advocacy for a better Philippines. They all aspired for a nation where people can live happily and without fear.

An Maogmang Lugar: Jesse Robredo’s Aspiration

Not many people know this: I was with Jesse from the very start. The Ateneo de Naga high school followed a simplified system that seated students in alphabetical order in the classrooms and this thrust me beside Jesse. We sat side by side for a while until a relative of mine, Arnel, with the same surname came to sit between us. But this did not change the bond between Jesse and I that was forged on that fateful first day of school as high school freshmen many years ago.

This special award honours 100 women from Asia who have displayed creativity in rural life, courage, empowerment, resistance in the face of crisis and disasters and who have tirelessly worked to improve the quality of life in rural communities.
