VATICAN CITY, MAY 1, 2011 (Zenit.org).- More than 1 million pilgrims participated in the most crowded beatification in history today in Rome.

A huge round of applause rose up from St. Peter’s Square, passing along the Via della Conciliazione and side streets to the Circus Maximus -- where thousands of people followed the celebration on video screens -- when Benedict XVI read the formula of beatification.

VATICAN CITY, APRIL 24, 2010 (Zenit.org).- In his Easter message, Benedict XVI contrasted the joy of the Resurrection with the sufferings and "painful situations" that continue to afflict mankind, such as natural disasters, poverty, illness and war.

Before imparting his blessing "urbi et orbi" (to the city of Rome and the world), the Pope noted that at Easter "the hosts of angels, saints and blessed souls join with one voice in our exultant song. [...] But alas, it is not so on earth!"

Pontifical Council for Social Communications president Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli announced updated plans for the new site during his department's annual meeting this week. He has referred to the project several times in the last six months during Vatican press conferences.

In an interview with Vatican Radio Feb. 11, Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald said he hoped the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which is running Egypt, would follow the direction of constitutional reform and "will also respond to the other demands of the population with regard to social justice and with regard to political liberties as well."

To not be concerned with life's temporal problems would be to forget the Gospel teaching to love one's neighbor who is suffering and in need and "it would not be in harmony with Jesus' life," which combined proclaiming the Good News and curing people of disease and illness, the pope said in his message for World Mission Sunday 2011.

Part of this evening liturgy is the traditional singing of the “Te Deum” and Eucharistic adoration with benediction in thanksgiving for the past year.

VATICAN, Dec. 13, 2010 (CNS) -- A spate of U.S. diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks portray the Vatican as horrified over clerical sex abuse in Ireland but also deeply concerned that the procedures used by Irish investigators of the scandal were "an affront to Vatican sovereignty."

The cables, released Dec. 10-12, touched on a wide range of issues, from the Vatican's efforts to deal with leftist governments in Latin America to its recent moves to welcome disaffected Anglicans into the Catholic Church.
