MANILA — After nine years in power, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has left the Malacanang palace. She is no longer cloaked with presidential immunity, which she and her allies had used to shield her from corruption charges, human-rights violations and other alleged crimes against the Filipino people.

Up to her last weeks in office, impunity presented itself. For two consecutive days, journalists Jesiderio Camangyan, radio anchor of Sunrise FM in Davao Oriental, and Joselito Agustin of dzJC Aksyon Radyo in Laoag City, were shot dead. After the elections, human-rights worker Benjamin Bayles of Negros Occidental, union member Edward Panganiban of Laguna and Bayan Muna member Jim Gales of Davao were murdered in separate incidents.

CALAMBA, Laguna, Philippines – President Benigno C. Aquino III talks of the the present relevance of Philippines's national hero and cited mundane ways to emulate Rizal's heroism.

President Aquino led the rites and ceremonies to commemorate the 150th birthday of Dr. Jose Rizal right here in the hero's hometown yesterday.

While exulting Rizal's supreme sacrifice that paved the way for the freedom the country enjoys today, the president does not wish any more hero's death for any Filipino fighting for reform.

Wilson Flores of Phil Star reported few days ago such revelation by the multi-awarded, 41 year-old, head of the biggest province in Bicol. Camarines Sur has already overtaken Metro Manila and Boracay in number of tourist visitors. Very soon, Hollywood stars are expected to shoot films in the province. The governor is presently the chairman of the league of provinces in the Philippines.

EVERY NOW AND THEN, I would hear murmurs of queries on when train services to Bicol will resume. Most of these queries morph into desires and nostalgia to see the classic iron horse back clanging and honking along the tracks of our region.

EVERY NOW AND THEN, I would hear murmurs of queries on when train services to Bicol will resume. Most of these queries morph into desires and nostalgia to see the classic iron horse back clanging and honking along the tracks of our region. For now, as said in one of my poems, “the train station is quiet,” literally quiet—no personnel, no passengers, no vendors, no trains, only remnants of the rich past, memories of trains chugging to a complete halt at the station where throngs of passengers were caught in the noisy, liminal stupor of waiting and saying goodbyes.
