The death of the notorious al-Qaeda leader came almost 10 years after the US government spearheaded the manhunt operation against him following the 9/11 attack, leaving nearly 3,000 Americans dead.

March 30 is a sad day for Filipinos. Three overseas Filipino workers Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain were executed after being caught by Chinese immigration authorities and subsequently sentenced to death for carrying heroin into China.

Even before the execution, one could already feel the somber mood of the people being shown in television coverages. It’s as if time stood still until the announcement that the three were already dead.

Ramon Credo, Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, and Elizabeth Batain are set to be executed on Monday after they were found guilty of said charges by the Chinese judicial authorities.

Arroyo’s nine year rule left some 7,000 Filipino migrant workers jailed, more than 10,000 stranded in the Middle East alone, 108 in death row and six beheaded. Arroyo’s waning months as president could have provided President Benigno S. Aquino III a bird’s eye view of the hardships that OFWs went through.
