LEGAZPI City, Nov. 25, 2011―President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III said it is the responsibility of local government units to protect their fishing grounds from commercial fishers.

This was his reaction to a letter sent by Bicol-based bishops led by the Metropolitan of Caceres Archbishop Leonardo Z. Legazpi, OP, DD two months ago calling on the Aquino administration to ban the rampant commercial fishing in municipal waters.

 CAMP SIMEON OLA, LEGAZPI CITY (Aug 28, 2011) – While Typhoon “Mina” was bringing scattered rains to Albay last Friday (August 26), the Office of the Civil Defence (OCD) regional director for Bicol, Bernardo Rafaelito R. Alejandro IV, was releasing a report on the impacts of tropical storm and consequent lahar flows from Mayon Volcano and the flooding in Albay in July brought by previous typhoon, “Juaning.”

LPA  tagged Tropical Disturbance 98W  is way off  Batanes islands but still brings rains and thunderstorms.

The Low Pressure Area (LPA) tagged Tropical Disturbance 98W remains weak as it moves north across the North Philippine Sea, located about 575 km North Northeast of Batanes at coordiantes 24.8 North Latitude 125.1 East Longitude. This system has a low chance of becoming a Tropical Cyclone within the next 24 hours. But it will continue to pull the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) Rains across Mindoro, Marinduque, Bicol, Palawan, Calamian Group, Romblon, Visayas and Western Luzon including Metro Manila and Southern Tagalog Provinces.

LEGAZPI City (July 1, 2011) – Rescue teams of the Philippine Navy, using 2 sea vessels and an aircraft, have ended the search for 10 missing fishermen from Ligao City and the towns of Virac and Bato in Catanduanes province.

An official report on Thursday, (June 30) from the Office of the Civil Defence (OCD) Bicol office and the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC) bared that the 10 fishermen lost at sea and will not be searched anymore were identified as:

Rosa Ordan, 54, barangay Basag, of Ligao City;

Legazpi City (14 December) – After being publicly criticized for being “rude” to some members of the local press in the past months, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Bicol Regional Director Danilo Dequito recently had a dialogue with the media at the “Kapihan sa Embarcadero” here last December 7.

In the dialogue, Dequito said he welcomed the interfacing while at the same time announcing future projects of the agency in the region.

Mt Bulusan spews ash and black smoke, triggering the evacuation of at least 100 people living near its slopes in Sitio Gimaloto, Ingladian village in Casiguran town, Sorsogon at around 3:45pm yesterday. No one was reported injured during the latest explosion. Soldiers of the 49th Infantry Battalion are placed on high alert to assist in the evacuation of the residents in the 4-kilometer danger zone.
